The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced a significant extension for its free online document update service for Aadhaar cardholders. This facility, which allows individuals to update their Proof of Identity (PoI) and Proof of Address (PoA) documents, will now remain free until June 14, 2027.
This initiative aims to encourage residents to keep their Aadhaar information current, ensuring the accuracy of demographic details linked to their unique identification numbers.
What the Free Update Covers
The extended free service specifically applies to online updates of Proof of Identity (PoI) and Proof of Address (PoA) documents. These updates can be performed conveniently through the UIDAI's official myAadhaar portal, eliminating the need to visit an enrolment center for these particular changes.
What's Not Included in the Free Update
It is crucial to understand that while PoI and PoA document updates are free online, other types of Aadhaar corrections or updates may still incur charges. The free facility does not cover changes to your name, date of birth, mobile number, or biometric information (such as fingerprints, iris scans, or photographs). For these specific updates, residents may need to follow separate procedures and pay applicable fees. For instance, a demographic update typically costs ₹75, while a biometric update usually costs ₹125.
Steps for Online Aadhaar Document Update
Updating your documents online is a straightforward process. Follow these steps:
- Visit the Official UIDAI Website: Navigate to the official UIDAI portal.
- Access myAadhaar: Open the myAadhaar portal and select the 'Document Update' service.
- Verify Identity: Enter your Aadhaar number and complete the verification process using the One-Time Password (OTP) sent to your registered mobile number.
- Review Details: Your existing Aadhaar details will be displayed. Select the appropriate document category for your PoI and PoA.
- Upload Documents: Upload clear and legible scans of your valid Proof of Identity and Proof of Address documents.
- Submit Request: Confirm that all information is correct and submit your request.
- Save Acknowledgment: Make sure to save the acknowledgement slip or Service Request Number (SRN) for future reference.
UIDAI will verify your submitted documents before approving the update. It's important to ensure your documents are valid and the information matches your Aadhaar details to avoid rejection.
Offline Updates and Biometrics
For updates that cannot be performed online, such as changes to your photograph, fingerprints, or iris details, you must visit an authorised Aadhaar Enrolment or Update Centre. When visiting a center, remember to carry your Aadhaar number and original supporting documents. Children also require mandatory biometric updates upon reaching the ages of five and fifteen; parents should ensure these updates are completed at an authorised center.
Before initiating any update, always check the latest fee schedule and specific requirements on the official UIDAI website to confirm charges and procedures for your particular request.
