Akasa Air Plans Major Fleet Expansion with Over 200 Boeing 737 MAX Jets

· · 2 min read

Akasa Air is reportedly in talks to order over 200 additional Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, aiming to significantly expand its fleet beyond 2032. This potential multi-billion dollar deal would bolster the airline's presence in India's competitive aviation market.

Indian carrier Akasa Air is reportedly negotiating a substantial order for more than 200 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. This strategic move aims to significantly expand its operational fleet and secure delivery slots well into the next decade, according to recent reports.

Ambitious Expansion Plans

Launched in 2022, Akasa Air currently operates 43 Boeing 737 MAX planes and already has an existing order for 183 more. The proposed new purchase would ensure the airline's continued growth trajectory beyond 2032, allowing it to increase its footprint in both domestic and international sectors. Akasa Air presently serves 29 domestic and seven international destinations.

A decision on this potential new order is anticipated early next year, with the terms possibly finalized by the second half of 2027. However, discussions remain in their preliminary stages and may not ultimately lead to a completed purchase.

Market Presence and Competition

The deal, estimated to be worth billions of dollars before industry discounts, would mark Boeing's second major aircraft sale in India, following Air India's combined order for 250 aircraft. Akasa Air, owned by SNV Aviation Pvt., is striving to enhance its market share in India's rapidly growing but highly competitive aviation sector. Currently, IndiGo and the Air India Group collectively dominate approximately 90% of the passenger market.

Official data from last month indicates Akasa Air carried 5.5% of India's domestic passengers, a figure it aims to substantially increase with its planned fleet expansion. In comparison, IndiGo accounted for 65% and the Air India Group for 27% during the same period.

Financial Strategy and Industry Outlook

To support its aggressive growth plans, Akasa Air is also actively seeking to raise $109 million through a combination of equity and debt. The airline is reportedly in discussions with state-run banks to access a government credit line available to carriers impacted by global events, with some funds potentially earmarked for aircraft acquisition.

India's aviation industry has witnessed remarkable growth, with the national airline fleet expanding from around 100 aircraft in 2000 to nearly 900 today. With over 1,500 additional planes currently on order across various carriers, the sector is poised for sustained expansion, making Akasa Air's planned fleet expansion a key development.
