Aluminium Stocks Rally: Emkay Predicts Up to 53% Upside for Vedanta, Hindalco Despite Price Drop

· · 3 min read

Despite a recent fall in aluminium prices below $3,000 per tonne, brokerage Emkay Global Financial Services forecasts significant upside for key Indian aluminium stocks. The firm suggests a 'Buy' rating on Vedanta Aluminium and Hindalco, projecting up to 53% potential growth.

Indian aluminium stocks, including Vedanta Aluminium Metal Ltd, National Aluminium Company Ltd (Nalco), and Hindalco Industries Ltd, have experienced a correction in line with a recent dip in global aluminium prices. Prices have fallen below $3,000 per tonne from their June 2026 highs. However, financial services firm Emkay Global believes this downturn is not the start of a prolonged cycle, forecasting an upside of up to 53% for these stocks.

Emkay's Outlook on Aluminium Stocks

While Emkay remains cautious in the near term due to factors like the reassessment of Middle East supply disruptions, faster-than-expected smelter restarts, and additional capacity in Indonesia, its long-term view is positive. The brokerage cites low global inventories, the gradual recovery of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) smelters, and persistent constraints on Chinese supply as key factors supporting aluminium prices.

Investment Recommendations and Upside Potential

  • Vedanta Aluminium Metal Ltd: Emkay suggests a 'Buy' rating with a target price of Rs 550, indicating a substantial 53% potential upside.
  • Hindalco Industries Ltd: The firm also recommends 'Buy' for Hindalco, setting a target of Rs 1,150, which implies a 29% upside. Hindalco's diversified earnings profile and downstream operations position it favorably to withstand price corrections.
  • National Aluminium Company Ltd (Nalco): Emkay advises 'Reduce' on Nalco, with a target of Rs 340, still suggesting a 7% potential upside. Nalco faces higher downside risks due to its greater exposure to upstream aluminium realizations and operating leverage.

Factors Influencing Price Correction

The 9% drop in aluminium prices over the past month can be attributed to several factors. The gradual recovery of operations at Emirates Global Aluminium and Aluminium Bahrain has eased concerns about prolonged supply shortages. GCC output saw a 2% month-on-month increase, although it remains 43% lower year-on-year. Higher Chinese exports, reaching 158 kilotonnes in August 2026, also helped mitigate the supply shortfall.

Further pressure came from a stronger US dollar, elevated bond yields, softer physical premiums in Asia, and the unwinding of bullish positions. These elements have collectively weighed on aluminium prices and related equities, reflecting lower spot-price assumptions and a partial reversal of the supply-scarcity premium previously built into valuations.

Persistent Market Tightness Despite Price Falls

Despite the recent price correction, Emkay highlights that the physical supply chain has not fully normalized. London Metal Exchange (LME) inventories remain exceptionally low at approximately 239 kilotonnes, near multi-decade lows. Physical premiums also remain elevated in several markets, such as the European duty-paid premium at $520 a tonne and a substantially higher US Midwest premium due to physical availability and tariffs.

Emkay noted, "The divergence between weaker benchmark prices and elevated regional premiums indicates that the physical supply chain has not fully normalised. LME prices are increasingly reflecting expectations of a future supply recovery, while physical premiums and inventories continue to show tightness in immediately available metal."

The brokerage expects the global aluminium deficit to be 1.6 million tonnes in calendar year 2026 and 700 kilotonnes in calendar year 2027, with China's ability to increase primary metal supply still constrained by its capacity ceiling. A sustained rebuilding of exchange inventories, rather than just a decline in benchmark prices, would provide stronger evidence of a structurally comfortable supply environment.
