BigBasket, the prominent online grocery platform under the Tata Group, has officially announced the appointment of Amazon veteran Amit Nanda as its new Chief Executive Officer. The announcement, made on June 16, marks a significant leadership transition for the company as co-founder Hari Menon steps down from the CEO role.
Menon, who was instrumental in building BigBasket from its inception, will continue to contribute to the company's strategic direction. He will remain on the board, alongside fellow co-founder Vipul Parekh, to mentor the new leadership team and ensure a smooth transition.
Amit Nanda's Extensive Background
Amit Nanda brings over two decades of robust experience across the e-commerce, consumer goods, and consumer banking sectors. Before joining BigBasket, he spent more than 11 years at Amazon, most recently serving as Director of Selling Partner Services. In this role, he oversaw one of Amazon India's largest businesses, managing its extensive third-party marketplace ecosystem. His tenure at Amazon also included leadership positions in marketplace development, product management, technology, and the scaling of Amazon's private label brands.
Prior to his impactful career at Amazon, Nanda held key leadership positions at Hindustan Unilever and Citibank. His diverse professional journey has equipped him with deep expertise in building customer-centric businesses at scale, brand strategy, marketing, and digital commerce.
Academically, Nanda is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (1999–2001), where he earned a postgraduate management degree. He also holds a mechanical engineering degree from Delhi College of Engineering.
Vision for BigBasket's Future
The appointment of Nanda comes at a crucial time for BigBasket as it aims to solidify its position in the competitive quick commerce segment and drive innovation across its various business verticals. His proven track record in managing large marketplace ecosystems and scaling operations is expected to be central to BigBasket's next phase of growth.
Hari Menon expressed his enthusiasm for Nanda's arrival, stating,
"Having built bigbasket from its inception to its current position as one of India's most trusted consumer platforms, I am delighted to welcome Amit as CEO. His deep understanding of consumers, strong track record of building and scaling businesses, and extensive experience across e-commerce and consumer sectors make him uniquely positioned to lead bigbasket for its journey ahead."
Amit Nanda shared his excitement about his new role, emphasizing the company's strong foundation.
"I am incredibly excited to join bigbasket and build upon the phenomenal trust it has established with millions of consumers across India. Combining bigbasket's customer-first values with the trusted legacy of the Tata Group creates a strong foundation for the future,"Nanda commented. He also expressed admiration for the organization Hari Menon and his team have built, particularly its powerhouse private labels, and looks forward to partnering with the leadership team to achieve shared visions and capture growth opportunities.
Sajith Sivanandan, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Digital, also welcomed Nanda, highlighting his suitability for the role.
"His experience in leading large-scale businesses and driving product and technology strategy across critical marketplace capabilities combined with his deep understanding of digital commerce and consumer behaviour, makes him an excellent choice to lead Bigbasket,"said Sivanandan.
This leadership change follows another recent strategic move within BigBasket, with Seshu Kumar Tirumala being elevated to Chief Operating Officer earlier this month. Tirumala, who joined in 2014, is now tasked with spearheading operations and driving execution, particularly as the company expands its quick-commerce offerings.
