Bengaluru's Food Safety and Drugs Administration Department conducted extensive raids on August 8, targeting hotels, pubs, restaurants, and food storage facilities across the Bengaluru Urban district and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) zones. The inspections uncovered a range of severe violations, leading to the shutdown of a popular pub and the seizure of 132 kilograms of food items deemed unfit for consumption.
Luxury Pub Shut Down Amid Gross Violations
One of the most significant actions taken was the immediate closure of Skyye Lounge, a prominent pub located within the upscale UB City mall. Officials reported finding the kitchen in a highly unhygienic state, with rotten chicken and beef, some showing visible signs of fungus, discovered on the premises. Approximately 45 kilograms of these putrid meats were seized. Additionally, around 6 kilograms of vegetable cutlets were declared unfit, and milk and curd found had expired roughly ten days prior to the inspection.
In total, 51 kilograms of various food articles from Skyye Lounge were confiscated and subsequently destroyed. Inspectors also disposed of about 15 litres of used cooking oil, highlighting the extent of the unsanitary conditions.
Widespread Seizures Across Multiple Eateries
The special drive extended beyond Skyye Lounge, with numerous other establishments facing similar actions. At the Royal Chain Hotel, officials seized 50 kilograms of duck and 5 kilograms of fish. Madras Kitchen saw 5 kilograms of green peas confiscated, while Tescon Hotel had 5 kilograms of mushrooms taken. Senchez Hotel also had 3 kilograms of fish seized. Furthermore, another 7 kilograms of various food items, including cake, potatoes, and tacos, were discarded due to unsuitability.
Overall, the raids resulted in the confiscation of 132 kilograms of food products, including a substantial 70 kilograms of soy sauce. Approximately 10 litres of beverages, such as strawberry-flavoured drinks nearing their expiry dates, were also seized.
Inspections at Major Storage Facilities
The scope of the operation also included food storage and distribution centres, specifically Coldman Logistics and Radhakrishna Foodland, which supply products to many reputable hotels and caterers in Bengaluru. Inspections at these facilities revealed around 70 kilograms of soy sauce and other sauces that were nearing their expiry dates.
As part of the investigation, five meat samples and 13 other food samples were collected from various locations and sent for detailed laboratory analysis. The department deployed 30 dedicated teams, comprising designated officers and food safety officers, to conduct these thorough checks on storage conditions, food quality, and safety measures.
Legal Action Imminent
Authorities have stated that legal action will be initiated against all food business operators found to be in violation of food safety and quality requirements, in accordance with the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act. This stern action underscores the department's commitment to ensuring public health and safety in Bengaluru's bustling food industry.
