· · 3 min read

Homegrown Balkrishna Industries Ltd (BKT) has signed a strategic agreement with Italian tyre giant Pirelli to produce up to 800,000 premium Pirelli-branded car tyres in India by 2030. The deal also explores a 50:50 joint venture for a dedicated manufacturing plant.

Balkrishna Industries Ltd (BKT), an Indian tyre manufacturer, has announced a significant strategic agreement with Italy’s Pirelli, a global leader in high-performance tyres. The partnership aims to manufacture up to 800,000 Pirelli-branded premium car tyres in India by 2030, marking a major expansion in the country's automotive sector.

Expanding Production and Market Reach

The initial agreement lays the groundwork for a second phase, which includes the potential establishment of a 50:50 joint venture. This joint venture would focus on building a dedicated manufacturing plant specifically for high-value car tyres. The proposed facility is intended to produce tyres under both the Pirelli and BKT brands, serving both the rapidly growing Indian market and various international markets.

This collaboration comes at a pivotal moment as India continues to emerge as one of the world's most attractive automotive markets. Projections indicate a 5–7% annual growth in car registrations between 2025 and 2030, with the premium car tyre market expected to expand nearly fivefold during the same period.

Strategic Advantages for Both Companies

For Pirelli, which already has a commercial presence in India, the agreement represents a crucial step towards strengthening its market position, particularly within the high-value tyre segment. Marco Tronchetti Provera, Executive Chairman of Pirelli, highlighted India's central role in the global automotive industry's evolution and praised BKT as a first-class industrial partner.

“The agreement with BKT, a first-class industrial partner with solid roots in India and a significant international presence, represents for Pirelli a strategic choice which will allow us to strengthen our position in a market among those with the greatest growth potential and to accompany its evolution, drawing on our competencies, innovation and positioning in the segments with the greatest value,” said Marco Tronchetti Provera.

For BKT, the partnership offers a significant opportunity to diversify into the passenger car tyre business, opening new avenues for growth both domestically and internationally. Arvind Poddar, Chairman and Managing Director of BKT, emphasized that the collaboration combines complementary strengths to capitalize on market opportunities and create value for both entities.

Andrea Casaluci, CEO of Pirelli, noted that the collaboration would merge BKT’s industrial excellence and market knowledge with Pirelli’s innovative technologies and premium positioning. Rajiv Poddar, Joint Managing Director of BKT, added that Pirelli’s decision to partner with BKT acknowledges the Indian company's manufacturing strength, quality standards, and decades of expertise. He stressed that BKT’s industrial scale, combined with Pirelli’s technological leadership, forms a strong foundation for a long-term partnership serving customers worldwide.
