Boston-based entrepreneur Sneha Biswas shared a poignant reflection recently, expressing her profound regret over a missed opportunity to meet the revered industrialist Ratan Tata. The incident dates back to January 2020, when Biswas, then an intern at Tata Steel, sent an email to the Tata Group chairman emeritus.
An Unexpected Reply from Ratan Tata
To Biswas's surprise, Ratan Tata, then 82 years old and receiving countless messages daily, not only read her email but also took the time to reply. This gesture of humility and genuine care left a lasting impression on Biswas, who noted that many younger leaders often fail to respond to strangers.
"He didn't have to," Biswas wrote in a social media post, emphasizing Tata's unique character. The industrialist's willingness to engage with an intern highlighted his commitment to people, a trait Biswas deeply admired.
The Missed Opportunity
The email exchange led to an even more significant development: Tata's office reached out to schedule a personal meeting with Biswas. An aide conveyed Tata's eagerness to meet her and requested a suitable date.
However, fate intervened. Biswas was scheduled to fly back to Boston that very day. Believing another chance would present itself, she made the decision to decline the meeting. "I thought, no worries, next time," she recalled.
Unfortunately, that 'next time' never materialized. Biswas remained in the United States, dedicating herself to building her own ventures. Before another meeting could be arranged, Ratan Tata passed away in 2024.
A Lasting Lesson in Leadership
Today, Biswas often revisits her inbox, searching for "RNT" to reread Tata's email. The message serves as a powerful reminder of his leadership philosophy, characterized by warmth, sincerity, and profound humility. Her biggest takeaway from the experience is a commitment to treat others with the same kindness and respect Tata showed her, should she ever achieve even a fraction of his stature.
Some regrets, she acknowledges, truly stay with you forever.
