BSE Shares Jump Post-Q2 Results, But Analysts Warn of Valuation Concerns

· · 3 min read

BSE Ltd. shares rallied nearly 6% on Thursday after strong Q2 FY27 earnings, reaching Rs 3,842. However, analysts are divided, with some flagging rich valuations and limited market-share gains despite the surge.

Shares of BSE Ltd. experienced a significant surge on Thursday, gaining nearly 6% to trade at Rs 3,842. This rally follows the announcement of robust financial results for the second quarter of Fiscal Year 2027 (Q2 FY27). The company reported a net profit of Rs 808.15 crore, marking a 44.9% year-on-year (YoY) increase, while revenue from operations climbed 34.1% YoY to Rs 1,432.6 crore.

Despite the positive earnings, the stock remains approximately 15% below its all-time high of Rs 4,446.80, recorded on May 27, 2026. The market capitalization now stands at Rs 1.56 lakh crore. Over the past five years, BSE shares have delivered an impressive return of nearly 2,400%, with a 55% increase in the last year alone.

Analysts Divided on Future Outlook Amid Valuation Worries

The strong Q2 FY27 performance has led to a split among market analysts regarding BSE's future prospects. While some remain optimistic about margin performance and growth momentum, others express caution over rich valuations and the sustainability of recent market-share gains.

"A modest beat does not change our cautious view. While a higher options ADTO drives a 3-4 per cent upgrade to FY28-29E EPS, we believe options growth is unlikely to sustain in FY28-29E as share gains get harder. Cash equity market share was also below management's double-digit target," stated Jefferies.

Jefferies maintained an 'underperform' rating on BSE, setting a price target of Rs 3,100. Their concerns stem from the potential for growth to slow in FY28E as market-share gains become more challenging, the risk of the 20% premium to NSE not being sustained, and an anticipated management transition by June 2027.

Optimism for Volume Recovery and Strategic Positioning

Conversely, other brokerage firms see a clearer path for growth. Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd. highlighted a sequential dip in financial performance during the quarter due to CAS-related impacts but noted a surge in October 2026 volumes, supported by market volatility. With the partial reversal of CAS effective from December 2026, derivatives activity is expected to normalize faster, boosting top-line growth and margin expansion.

"We expect BSE to witness a strong recovery in volume growth, aided by rising member participation and an improving P/N ratio. An improved growth trajectory in the cash segment, robust demand for co-location, and the strong positioning of the Star MF platform will also contribute to the company's performance. We reiterate our 'buy' rating on the stock with a target price of Rs 4,200," said Motilal Oswal.

PL Capital echoed a similar sentiment, maintaining a 'buy' rating with a target price of Rs 4,015. They adjusted their FY27 operating revenue estimates to factor in a volume recovery following the CAS revision, though they acknowledge that elevated operating expenses due to technology investments and clearing costs might weigh on EBITDA margins.

HDFC Securities also maintained an 'add' rating, revising their target price to Rs 4,180. They project an FY26-29E EPS CAGR of 23.3%, anticipating options premium market share to reach 32-33% by FY29E, up from 25% in FY26. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) decoupling expiry settlement from the auction, restoring the last 30-minute VWAP for index and stock derivatives, is seen as a key positive development.
