Union Cabinet Greenlights Significant Bonus for Railway Staff
The Union Cabinet has given its nod for a productivity-linked bonus (PLB) equivalent to 78 days' wages for 1,140,770 eligible non-gazetted Railway employees. This substantial payout, totaling ₹2,009.61 crore, will see individual staff members receive a maximum of ₹17,951. The bonus is slated to be disbursed before the upcoming Durga Puja/Dussehra holidays, continuing an annual tradition.
The government stated that this payment serves as a recognition of the dedicated performance of Railway staff and is intended to motivate employees to further enhance the operational efficiency and overall performance of the Indian Railways.
Strong Performance Led to Bonus Approval
The approval for this significant bonus package follows a period of robust performance by the Indian Railways during the 2025-26 financial year. The national transporter achieved remarkable milestones, including loading a record 1670 Million Tonnes of cargo and facilitating travel for nearly 7.41 Billion passengers.
Understanding the Productivity-Linked Bonus (PLB)
The Productivity Linked Bonus is a unique payment mechanism directly tied to the performance and productivity metrics of eligible Railway employees. The Indian Railways holds the distinction of being the first departmental undertaking of the Government of India to implement such a PLB scheme.
This particular bonus system was deemed more appropriate for the Railways compared to adhering to the Payment of Bonus Act, 1965, which does not directly apply to the railway sector. However, the broad principles and guidelines of the Act, concerning aspects like wage ceilings and the definition of salary or wages, were considered in shaping the PLB framework.
The PLB scheme for Railway employees was officially introduced in the 1979-80 fiscal year. Its development involved extensive consultation with the two recognized federations, the All India Railwaymen's Federation and the National Federation of Indian Railwaymen, and received final approval from the Cabinet. The scheme also incorporates a provision for review every three years to ensure its continued relevance and effectiveness.
Who Benefits from the PLB?
The approved bonus covers a wide array of non-gazetted Railway staff across various operational and administrative roles. Eligible categories include Track maintainers, Loco Pilots, Train Managers (formerly Guards), Station Masters, Supervisors, Technicians, Technician Helpers, Pointsmen, Ministerial staff, and other Group 'C' employees who contribute to the daily functioning of the vast railway network.
