Chandrasekhar Slams Stanford Students' Pichai Walkout Over 'Extreme Ignorance'

· · 2 min read

BJP Kerala president Rajeev Chandrasekhar criticized Stanford University students who walked out during Google CEO Sundar Pichai's commencement address. He labeled their protest over Google's Israel ties as 'extreme ignorance' and a 'foolish abuse' of their opportunity.

BJP Kerala president Rajeev Chandrasekhar has sharply criticized Stanford University students who staged a walkout during Google CEO Sundar Pichai's commencement address, labeling their actions as an example of "extreme ignorance." The incident occurred as approximately 200 students departed the ceremony, protesting Google's business ties with Israel.

Chandrasekhar Condemns Student Actions

In a social media post, Chandrasekhar shared a video of the students leaving the venue, asserting that they had squandered a valuable opportunity to learn at a world-class institution and hear from a highly successful individual like Pichai. While acknowledging that young people often exhibit a natural enthusiasm for challenging systems and fighting for causes, he emphasized that such activism should not be conflated with "ignorance or foolish behaviour."

"This is the latest example of the extreme ignorance that seems to have gripped some of our youth today," Chandrasekhar stated. "You are living in the age of Artificial Intelligence, not in the age of ignorance."

Details of the Stanford Protest

Sundar Pichai, a Stanford alumnus who earned a Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering from the university, returned to deliver the commencement address to the class of 2026. Reports indicate that around 200 students, out of over 3,600 graduates and 20,000 attendees, walked out during his speech.

The protesting students reportedly carried Palestinian flags and banners, chanting slogans such as 'Free Palestine.' Their condemnation focused on Google's ties with the Israeli government, specifically highlighting a contentious $1.2 billion cloud-computing deal from 2021, known as Project Nimbus. The protest was organized by groups including 'Students for Justice in Palestine' and 'No Tech for Apartheid.' This walkout follows similar demonstrations at Stanford's commencement ceremonies over the past three years, which have addressed Israel's conflict in Gaza and the university's response to pro-Palestinian activism on campus.

Broader Reactions to the Incident

Chandrasekhar's remarks underscore a growing debate regarding student activism and the responsibilities of educational institutions and public figures. The incident at Stanford has drawn varied reactions, with some echoing Chandrasekhar's sentiment about the perceived lack of discernment among certain youth, while others support the students' right to protest corporate and political affiliations they deem unjust.
