After nearly eight decades of isolation, the distant town of Rowghat in Chhattisgarh's Kanker district has been integrated into India's national railway grid. The historic milestone was marked by the inauguration of passenger services, ending 79 years without rail connectivity since India's independence.
The breakthrough came with the completion of the 17.5-km Tadoki-Rowghat rail section, which finalized the larger 95-km Dalli-Rajhara-Rowghat project. This significant infrastructure endeavor was built at an investment of ₹1,628 crore. Previously, passenger operations only extended to Tadoki, 77.5 km short of Rowghat.
New Rail Link Connects Remote Bastar Region
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai inaugurated the new section in person, while Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw joined virtually from New Delhi to flag off the passenger services. These new lines now connect Rowghat directly with the state capital, Raipur, via Dalli-Rajhara.
For generations, residents of this remote pocket within the Bastar region faced severe transit constraints. These limitations hindered access to higher education, specialized medical care, local job opportunities, and major commercial markets. The arrival of regular passenger lines is set to transform this landscape, creating a seamless economic bridge and improving the quality of life for the local population.
Industrial and Economic Impact
Beyond public mobility, this infrastructure triumph serves a crucial industrial purpose. The Rowghat tract is rich in iron ore reserves, vital for the country's steel sector, including the Bhilai Steel Plant operated by SAIL. The newly established rail link is expected to fast-track raw material logistics, streamline supply chains, and stimulate localized economic growth across the region.
The 95-km Dalli-Rajhara-Rowghat stretch is part of an even larger 240-km Dallirajhara-Rowghat-Jagdalpur railway initiative. This joint venture involves the Chhattisgarh government, NMDC, SAIL, and Indian Railways, with future plans to extend the link further toward Jagdalpur, Koraput in Odisha, and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
Broader Railway Development in Chhattisgarh
Alongside the Rowghat milestone, Chief Minister Sai also inaugurated the 22-km Abhanpur-Kurud broad gauge section, part of the larger Abhanpur-Dhamtari gauge conversion project. Furthermore, he laid the foundation stone for a modern electric locomotive maintenance facility in Raipur.
This state-of-the-art facility is designed to house up to 300 high-horsepower electric locomotives and is slated to manufacture modern 9,000-horsepower electric locomotives that comply with international standards, with potential for future exports. Officials highlighted that railway works worth ₹57,000 crore are currently underway across Chhattisgarh, which has achieved 100% railway electrification and is actively redeveloping 32 stations.
