Consumers in major Indian cities are seeing varied changes in fuel prices as of September 9, 2026. While Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder rates remain stable, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) have experienced recent price hikes in key metropolitan areas like Delhi and Mumbai.
Fuel Price Updates Across India
Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) implemented a significant increase in Mumbai's CNG prices, raising them by ₹2 per kg to ₹88 per kg, effective September 1. Concurrently, domestic piped natural gas (DPNG) saw a ₹1 per SCM hike. This follows Indraprastha Gas Ltd's (IGL) earlier increase of ₹3.89 per kg in Delhi, pushing CNG prices to ₹86.98 per kg from ₹83.09 per kg. Delhi's CNG prices have now climbed by nearly ₹10 per kg since January.

Factors Behind the Hikes
The recent surge in CNG and PNG prices is primarily attributed to a sharp rise in international Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) prices. This increase is largely a consequence of renewed tensions in West Asia and disruptions affecting gas shipments through the critical Strait of Hormuz. Global crude oil markets also reflect these geopolitical risks, with Brent crude nearing the psychological $100-a-barrel mark and US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rising to $94.63 a barrel.
Government Initiatives and Geopolitical Impact
In response to supply uncertainties and to reduce reliance on imported cooking gas, the Indian government is actively pursuing strategies to secure alternative sources and bolster domestic LPG availability. An incentive scheme for city gas distributors, approved from September 1, 2026, aims to expand domestic PNG connections. States and Union Territories are urged to provide administrative support to facilitate the transition from LPG to piped gas.
Geopolitical developments, particularly escalating hostilities between the US and Iran, have further tightened global oil supplies. Recent reports indicate US strikes on Iranian oil tankers and retaliatory actions, contributing to increased crude market volatility and adding a fresh risk premium to energy prices worldwide.
