Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the operator of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), has lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against 63 social media handles. The action was taken in response to the circulation of misleading posts and videos that falsely suggested extensive flooding and operational disruptions at the airport.
According to DIAL, these posts contained factually incorrect information, with some accounts allegedly sharing old or unrelated footage, including a video of waterlogging at Dubai Airport, to misrepresent the situation at Delhi Airport.
What Actually Happened at Delhi Airport?
On September 4, 2026, Delhi’s IGI Airport did experience temporary water accumulation at the Terminal 3 arrival forecourt. This occurred after an exceptionally heavy rainfall event, with approximately 72.2 mm of rain recorded within three hours between 2:30 PM and 5:30 PM.
Airport teams responded immediately, and the accumulated water was cleared within 20 minutes. DIAL confirmed that airport operations continued safely and smoothly, with no impact on services during or after the incident.
DIAL Alleges Public Mischief and Damage to Reputation
The airport operator stated that such content has the potential to create confusion among passengers, spread misinformation, and damage the reputation of a critical public utility service. A DIAL spokesperson emphasized that the circulation of misleading content “appears to be a deliberate attempt to create public mischief, damage the reputation of a public utility service, and generate unwarranted concerns among passengers.”
DIAL urges the public and passengers to rely exclusively on its official channels for accurate updates regarding airport operations and to disregard unverified information circulating on social media.
