The Delhi government has initiated a significant financial aid program, directly transferring funds to over 5.25 lakh students enrolled in Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) primary schools. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the direct benefit transfer (DBT) this week, aimed at assisting families with the purchase of essential school items.
Direct Financial Support for Students
Under this scheme, each eligible student has received ₹1,370 directly into their bank account. The total disbursement for this initiative stands at approximately ₹71.93 crore. Of the allocated amount per student, ₹1,250 is designated for school uniforms, while the remaining ₹120 is for school bags. This comprehensive support is intended to cover uniforms, shoes, school bags, and other crucial items needed for the academic session.
Ensuring Transparency and Reducing Burden
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized that the DBT model ensures transparency in fund disbursal, guaranteeing that every eligible child receives the intended assistance without intermediaries. The initiative is specifically designed to alleviate the financial burden on parents, many of whom come from economically weaker sections, by directly crediting funds rather than distributing them through schools.
Accessing the Funds
Parents and guardians of students in MCD primary schools are advised to check the bank accounts linked to their child’s school records for the credit of ₹1,370. This direct transfer mechanism streamlines the process, minimizing potential delays. The scheme covers a vast network of primary schools operated by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi across the capital.
This initiative forms a core part of the Delhi government’s broader commitment to support school-related expenses for students attending civic body-run institutions. Officials anticipate further details on subsequent phases or assistance for any remaining eligible students to be shared by the MCD and the city government.
