Delhi's 221-Foot Ravana Effigy: ₹40 Lakh, 7 Tonnes Iron, 120 Artisans

· · 2 min read

Delhi's Dwarka is set to unveil a 221-foot Ravana effigy for Dussehra, potentially the world's tallest. The ₹40 lakh project involved 120 artisans and seven tonnes of iron over three months.

Dwarka, Delhi, is preparing for a grand Dussehra celebration this year, featuring what organizers claim could be the world's tallest Ravana effigy. Standing at an imposing 221 feet, the colossal structure in Sector 10 is the centerpiece of the festivities, drawing significant attention ahead of the traditional Ravan Dahan ceremony.

A Monumental Undertaking

The creation of this towering effigy, which stands as tall as a 22-storey building, was a monumental task. The Dwarka Sri Ramleela Society spearheaded the project, which took approximately three months of intensive work to complete. Around 120 skilled artisans and workers, including craftsmen specially brought in from Chandigarh, contributed their expertise to bring the massive figure to life.

Constructing an effigy of this magnitude required substantial resources. Approximately seven tonnes of iron were used to form the robust framework necessary to support its extraordinary height. Ensuring stability was paramount; a 10-foot-deep pit was dug into the ground to securely anchor the structure, allowing it to withstand outdoor conditions.

Intricate Design and Modern Touches

Beyond its sheer size, the Ravana effigy boasts several distinctive design elements. Its attire is crafted from waterproof velvet, providing an elaborate finish while also protecting the structure from potential rain. A striking 25-foot crown adorns the effigy, adding to its majestic presence. The meticulous detailing, vibrant clothing, and overall scale have been carefully designed to ensure the effigy stands out during the celebrations.

The entire project incurred a cost of approximately ₹40 lakh, reflecting the significant investment in materials, construction, and the skilled labor required. This year's Dussehra festivities will also incorporate modern technology into the traditional ritual. Organizers plan to ignite the Ravana effigy using a remote-controlled mechanism, moving away from manual ignition. The event will also feature green crackers, emphasizing an environmentally conscious celebration.

Symbolism of Dussehra

The 221-foot Ravana will be joined by two other giant figures, representing Ravana’s brother Kumbhakarna and son Meghnad, each standing 90 feet tall. All three effigies are scheduled to be set ablaze during the Ravan Dahan ceremony on Dussehra, a festival also known as Vijayadashami. This significant day symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, commemorating Lord Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravana, as chronicled in the ancient epic Ramayana.
