Deven Choksey Favors Banking, Large-Caps; Cautions on Mid-Cap Valuations

· · 3 min read

Market expert Deven Choksey of DR Choksey FinServ sees opportunities in Indian banking stocks and undervalued large-cap companies. He warns investors about the high valuations in mid- and small-cap segments, advising caution.

Deven Choksey, Managing Director of DR Choksey FinServ, believes the Indian stock market offers selective opportunities, supported by encouraging earnings reports, renewed interest from foreign portfolio investors (FPIs), and consistent domestic purchasing. Choksey advises investors to prioritize quality companies with reasonable valuations, noting that large-cap stocks currently present a more secure investment compared to the highly valued mid- and small-cap segments.

Focus on Quality Amidst Valuation Concerns

Choksey highlighted that the first-quarter earnings season has been largely positive, with companies performing better than anticipated despite a challenging operational environment. He also pointed out the return of FPIs to Indian equities after a prolonged period of caution. While domestic investors continue to bolster small- and mid-cap stocks, driving the broader market upwards, Choksey issued a strong warning that valuations in these segments have significantly outpaced their underlying fundamentals.

"Good quality stocks when they are available at neglected valuation, it's time to buy them into the portfolio," Choksey stated, emphasizing his preference for large-cap companies where valuations remain more comfortable.

Banking Sector Looks Attractive

The banking sector stands out as particularly promising in Choksey's view. He cited attractive valuations, improving credit growth, and stronger-than-expected earnings as key drivers. Increased business activity and higher working capital demands from corporates are fueling demand for bank credit. Furthermore, global trade uncertainties have extended logistics and working capital cycles, increasing funding needs for businesses. Healthy retail consumption also supports large Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) and private-sector banks with substantial retail exposure.

Rupee Weakness Poses Key Risk

Despite the positive aspects, Choksey identified currency weakness as a significant concern for the market. He stressed the importance of the rupee stabilizing and ideally returning towards the Rs 91-a-dollar level to mitigate vulnerability. While much of the currency-related impact may have already occurred, Choksey cautioned that further depreciation could introduce broader market challenges.

LIC's Downside Largely Priced In

Regarding Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), Choksey suggested that the company's fundamentals remain robust and that much of its potential downside is already reflected in its current valuation. He noted the company's embedded value-to-EBITDA ratio has fallen below one. However, he also flagged that a continuous supply of shares in the market could limit its upside potential and impact investor confidence.

Selective Investment Strategy Advised

In conclusion, Choksey advises investors to adopt a selective approach. He recommends favoring fundamentally strong large-cap stocks that are available at attractive valuations, while exercising significant caution in the more expensive mid- and small-cap segments.
