Walt Disney is reportedly embarking on a substantial restructuring effort aimed at slashing its operating expenses by approximately 20%. This sweeping cost-cutting drive, which could impact thousands of employees, comes as the entertainment giant navigates a complex and evolving industry landscape.
Disney Targets 20% Cost Reduction
According to a Bloomberg report, Disney has instructed managers across its various teams to identify ways to reduce their department's annual expenditures by around 20%. This move is part of a broader restructuring exercise overseen by CEO Josh D’Amaro.
The company's decision to streamline its operations is a response to several pressing challenges. These include the disruptive influence of artificial intelligence on traditional entertainment business models, a series of weak box office performances, escalating competition in the streaming and content sectors, and a noticeable decline in attendance at its theme parks.
Reinvestment and Previous Workforce Reductions
While cutting costs, Disney also plans to strategically reinvest savings into key areas crucial for future growth. These include the development of new movies and TV shows, advancements in technology, and enhancements for its theme parks and cruise ship operations.
This isn't Disney's first foray into workforce adjustments. The company previously laid off approximately 1,000 employees in April and several hundred more from its human resources and technology divisions in September 2026, indicating an ongoing effort to optimize its workforce and operational efficiency.
Disney's restructuring mirrors a broader trend across the technology and entertainment sectors, where numerous companies, including Netflix, are implementing job cuts and reevaluating workforce requirements in response to rising costs, intensifying competition, and the rapid adoption of AI technologies.
