Prof. Dr. Anil Koul, a globally recognized biomedical scientist and pharmaceutical research expert, recently gained public attention after it was revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally appealed for his return to India. With over 25 years of experience in academia, biotechnology, and global drug discovery, Dr. Koul's career is marked by significant contributions to infectious disease research, particularly in the fight against tuberculosis.
Academic Roots and Early Career
Born in Kashmir, Dr. Koul pursued his higher education at the University of Delhi before moving to Germany for his doctoral research at the prestigious Max Planck Institute. His early scientific endeavors focused on molecular biology, infectious diseases, and the identification of novel drug targets, laying the groundwork for his future breakthroughs.
After completing his PhD, Dr. Koul worked with various biotechnology companies in Germany. In 2004, he joined the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson (J&J) in Belgium. There, he steadily advanced through the ranks, eventually becoming Senior Director and Head of Respiratory Infections Discovery.
Breakthrough in TB Treatment
One of Dr. Koul's most significant achievements was his crucial role in the discovery and development of Bedaquiline. This groundbreaking medicine was the first new treatment approved for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in over four decades. Bedaquiline revolutionized TB treatment worldwide and was subsequently included in the World Health Organization's list of essential medicines. For this monumental achievement, Dr. Koul and his team were honored with the prestigious American Chemical Society's Heroes of Chemistry Award.
PM Modi's Personal Appeal
The story of Prime Minister Modi's direct appeal to Dr. Koul came to light recently when Rajeev Juneja, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Mankind Pharma, shared the anecdote on a podcast. While Dr. Koul was working in Belgium, PM Modi personally encouraged him to return to India, emphasizing the nation's need for scientists of his caliber.
Return to India and Current Role
Inspired by the Prime Minister's call, Dr. Koul returned to India, serving as Director of the CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH) in Chandigarh from 2017 to 2019. During his tenure, he significantly strengthened infectious disease research, expanded virology and medicinal chemistry programs, and fostered collaboration between academia and industry within India.
Following his impactful stint in India, Dr. Koul briefly returned to global pharmaceutical research, taking on the role of Vice President and Head of Global Public Health Discovery & Partnerships at Johnson & Johnson. In 2025, he joined Bharat Serums & Vaccines and Mankind Pharma as Group Chief Scientific Officer, where he continues to lead innovation and next-generation drug development, further advancing India’s biomedical research ecosystem.
