Elara Capital Projects Rs 15 Lakh Crore Opportunity in India's Power Transmission Sector

· · 3 min read

Elara Capital projects a massive Rs 15 lakh crore opportunity in India's power transmission sector through FY36. This growth is fueled by expanding renewables, data centers, battery storage, and significant grid infrastructure investments.

India's power transmission and distribution equipment sector is entering a robust growth phase, driven by an expanding energy landscape that includes renewables, data centers, and battery energy storage systems, according to a recent report by Elara Capital. The brokerage estimates a monumental transmission opportunity of approximately Rs 15 lakh crore in India through fiscal year 2036.

Drivers of Transmission Growth and Global Investment

Beyond conventional transmission, new demand drivers are significantly impacting the sector. Elara Capital projects global grid investment to reach an estimated $606 billion by calendar year 2029, with India poised to capture a substantial share. Domestically, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) forecasts India's power demand to grow at a compound annual rate exceeding 5% between FY27 and FY36. This surge is attributed to rapid industrialization, increasing electrification, and emerging demands from electric vehicles, green hydrogen, and a projected Rs 2.7 lakh crore investment in data centers by FY30.

The estimated Rs 15 lakh crore transmission opportunity includes a mix of domestic projects, critical infrastructure for evacuating power from the Brahmaputra hydroelectric projects, and international high-voltage direct current (HVDC) initiatives. These investments are expected to dramatically increase demand for essential equipment such as transformers, switchgear, power conversion systems, and grid-stability solutions.

Easing Bottlenecks and Export Potential

While competitive bidding awards experienced a slowdown in FY26 due to challenges like land acquisition, right-of-way constraints, and limited high-voltage equipment capacity, Elara Capital notes that these bottlenecks are now easing. Improved project readiness, successful clearance acquisitions, and significant capacity additions within the industry are enhancing the availability of extra-high-voltage transformers and other critical components, supporting a recovery in competitive bidding orders.

Moreover, India's cost competitiveness and expanding capabilities in the 400-765 kV segment are creating substantial export opportunities for domestic equipment manufacturers. Global grid modernization efforts, coupled with ageing infrastructure in many regions, present a fertile ground for Indian companies. Elara suggests that greater global qualification will enable these firms to expand their footprint across the US, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Key indicators to monitor include overseas qualifications, repeat export orders, and a rising contribution from international sales.

Elara's Stock Ratings and Targets

In light of these opportunities, Elara Capital initiated coverage on several key players in the sector:

  • GE Vernova T&D India: Initiated with a 'buy' rating and a target price of Rs 5,547, making it Elara's top pick in the segment.
  • Siemens Energy India Ltd: Assigned an 'accumulate' rating with a target price of Rs 3,699.
  • Hitachi Energy India Ltd: Received a 'sell' rating with a target price of Rs 29,190. Elara cited potential risks including delays in HVDC orders, weaker export demand, parent-company order flows, and slower capacity expansion as factors influencing this rating.
