Harsh Goenka Questions India Inc's Focus as China Dominates Future Industries

· · 2 min read

RPG Group Chairman Harsh Goenka criticized India Inc's focus on consumer goods like ice cream and instant delivery, contrasting it with China's strategic dominance in future-defining sectors such as EVs, AI, and semiconductors. He urged Indian businesses to build industries the world will need tomorrow.

RPG Group Chairman Harsh Goenka has issued a strong challenge to India Inc, questioning the nation's strategic direction compared to China's aggressive pursuit of future-defining industries. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Goenka highlighted China's focus on sectors poised to dominate the next two decades, while suggesting Indian businesses remain preoccupied with consumer goods and instant delivery services.

China's Strategic Dominance in Key Sectors

Goenka pointed out that China is actively building a formidable position in critical areas such as rare earths, magnets, batteries, electric vehicles (EVs), robotics, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing. He emphasized that China's strategy involves controlling the entire ecosystem, from raw materials and technology to manufacturing and final distribution.

As a prime example, Goenka cited JL Mag, a Chinese company that already holds a dominant position in high-performance rare-earth magnets. He noted that JL Mag is now expanding its reach into components for humanoid robots, showcasing a clear trajectory towards cutting-edge innovation and industrial leadership.

India's Current Focus Under Scrutiny

In stark contrast, Goenka observed that a significant portion of Indian business activity is still concentrated on segments like bottled water, ice creams, snacks, packaged foods, and instant delivery. He further critiqued India's success in the software sector, describing it as largely built on "labour-cost arbitrage" rather than deep technological innovation or proprietary product development.

"China is building tomorrow’s infrastructure. We, in India, should be asking - what are we building that the world will need tomorrow?" Goenka questioned.

His remarks underscore a pressing concern about India's long-term industrial vision and its capacity to compete on a global scale in the technologies and industries that will shape the future economy.

The Imperative for India Inc

Goenka's comments serve as a call to action for Indian businesses to reassess their priorities and invest in foundational industries that will drive future growth and global relevance. The industrialist's intervention highlights the need for a strategic shift towards innovation, advanced manufacturing, and the development of sustainable competitive advantages beyond immediate consumer markets.
