Hyundai Motor Group, parent company of Hyundai and Kia, announced a $15.5 billion investment in India through 2032. This seven-year plan aims to expand manufacturing capacity, boost R&D, strengthen local sourcing, and develop future mobility businesses.

South Korean automotive giant Hyundai Motor Group has announced a substantial investment of $15.5 billion in India between 2026 and 2032. This strategic seven-year plan is set to significantly expand the manufacturing capacities of both Hyundai Motor India Ltd and Kia India, while also bolstering research and development efforts, local sourcing initiatives, and future mobility ventures across the country.

The announcement followed a pivotal meeting between Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. This commitment underscores India's escalating importance within the Korean automotive group's global growth strategy, positioning the nation as a core market for future expansion, emerging market penetration, and next-generation automotive innovation.

Strategic Investment and Expansion

To effectively manage this large-scale investment, Hyundai Motor Group will establish a dedicated investment entity in India. This entity will be responsible for coordinating and executing investments across various segments, including R&D infrastructure, advanced technologies, and the broader automotive industry ecosystem.

“India remains one of Hyundai Motor Group’s most important and strategic markets globally. The past 30 years have been defined by our commitment to India. This investment reaffirms our commitment to India for the next 30 years and beyond,” stated Euisun Chung, Executive Chair, Hyundai Motor Group. He added, “Through this investment, we will create more employment opportunities and work together with our partners and stakeholders to support India’s continued industrial development.”

The group's plans include expanding production capacity at its Hyundai and Kia facilities to meet rising demand and solidify India's role as a global export hub. Currently, Hyundai Motor Group boasts an annual manufacturing capacity exceeding 1.4 million vehicles across Hyundai's Chennai and Pune facilities and Kia's Anantapur plant.

Focus on R&D and Local Ecosystem

A significant portion of the investment, approximately $700 million, will be directed towards its Indian research and development center. This includes the establishment of a vehicle testing track, aimed at accelerating the development of next-generation automotive technologies. The group intends to strengthen local engineering capabilities, transforming India into a key innovation hub.

Furthermore, Hyundai Motor Group plans to enhance domestic sourcing by investing in regional partners and developing a more resilient local supply chain. The initiative also explores opportunities in emerging areas such as EV charging infrastructure, specialized automotive financing, and end-of-life vehicle recycling. Support for high-potential startups and the expansion of mobility services are also part of this comprehensive strategy.

With a current workforce of over 24,000 employees in India, the investment is expected to generate significant additional employment opportunities across manufacturing, engineering, R&D, and the broader supply chain. The announcement did not specify the exact allocation of investment between the Hyundai and Kia brands. Affiliates such as Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai Transys, Hyundai Capital, Hyundai Wia, and Hyundai Glovis already operate component and service operations in India, further integrating the group's presence.
