Delhi's extensive bus network is slated for a significant overhaul as IIT Delhi undertakes the task of creating an integrated public transport blueprint. Expected by February 2027, the comprehensive plan seeks to eliminate redundant routes, particularly those paralleling existing Metro lines, and enhance connectivity in parts of the city currently lacking adequate public transport access.
Rationalizing Routes for Efficiency
The primary objective of this exercise is to optimize the utilization of existing resources and extend public transport access to a wider population. A senior government official, quoted by The Times of India, emphasized that the initiative will make better use of current infrastructure and link more areas to the public transport system, increasing bus connectivity where it is most needed.
Officials confirm that the review process involves a detailed assessment of bus routes based on passenger demand and the availability of other transport modes, including the Metro, e-rickshaws, and Gramin Seva. This strategic approach aims to prevent multiple services from operating on identical corridors or serving the same neighborhoods, thereby freeing up resources for poorly connected areas.
Surveys Underway Across the Capital
The route rationalization is already in progress, with extensive passenger surveys being conducted across Delhi. Feedback has been gathered for 496 routes so far, covering 121 in the east zone, 181 in the west, and 194 in the north. This data will inform decisions on where to adjust or introduce new services.
Impact on Metro Corridors
Areas with robust Metro connectivity may see a reduction in bus frequency or the trimming of parallel routes. Resources saved from these adjustments will be redeployed to enhance services in underserved corridors, ensuring a more balanced and efficient city-wide network.
Integrating Other Transport Modes
The plan extends beyond buses to include e-rickshaws and auto-rickshaws, envisioning a larger role for these services in providing last-mile connectivity to neighborhoods without direct access to bus stops or Metro stations. This multi-modal approach aims for seamless travel throughout Delhi.
Developing Multi-Modal Transit Hubs
As part of the broader strategy to streamline urban mobility, Delhi also plans to develop key locations such as Anand Vihar, Hazrat Nizamuddin, and New Delhi railway stations into integrated multi-modal transit hubs. These hubs will facilitate easier transfers between different forms of public transport, enhancing the overall commuting experience.
