· · 3 min read

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds for Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and parts of Bihar and Northeast India today, June 17, 2026. Monsoon activity remains subdued across much of western and central India.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast for unsettled weather across various parts of India for June 17, 2026. Several states are expected to experience thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, with some regions also anticipating heavy rainfall. This comes as the crucial southwest monsoon continues to exhibit subdued activity over large areas of western and central India.

Northern Plains Brace for Gusty Winds and Isolated Rain

Residents in Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab should prepare for isolated rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong gusty winds. Wind speeds are projected to reach 40-50 kmph, with gusts potentially hitting 60 kmph in localized areas. Similar weather conditions are also expected across western Uttar Pradesh.

Rajasthan on Alert for Thundersqualls and Dust Storms

Rajasthan is likely to witness thundersqualls across both its eastern and western regions. Wind speeds could reach 50-60 kmph, with gusts up to 70 kmph. Western parts of the state may also continue to experience dust storm activity, impacting visibility and air quality.

Himalayan States and Northeast India Expect Rain

Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are forecast to receive scattered rainfall today. Himachal Pradesh specifically may experience gusty winds up to 50 kmph, while higher altitudes of the western Himalayas could see localized thunderstorms.

In Eastern India, Bihar is expected to receive isolated heavy rainfall. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are also likely across Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha.

Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are anticipated to be among the wettest regions, with widespread rainfall and the possibility of very heavy rain continuing over the next few days. The entire Northeast region, including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, is set for another wet spell with widespread rainfall. Heavy showers are particularly expected over Assam and Meghalaya, potentially leading to rising water levels in flood-prone areas.

Monsoon Deficit Lingers in Central and Western India

Central India, which has been grappling with a significant monsoon deficit, is expected to receive only isolated to scattered rainfall over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha. Thunderstorms and gusty winds, reaching up to 60 kmph, are likely over parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. However, meteorologists indicate that this rainfall may not be sufficient to significantly alleviate the existing deficit in the region.

Similarly, western India continues to await stronger monsoon activity. Despite scattered light rainfall over Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Gujarat, monsoon conditions remain weak. Mumbai and several parts of Maharashtra are still awaiting a more robust revival of the monsoon.

Peninsular India: Varied Rainfall Activity

Kerala is expected to remain the wettest part of peninsular India, with widespread rainfall continuing across the state. Heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry today. Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka may see scattered showers accompanied by thunderstorms.
