Cabinet Approves Major Rail Infrastructure Projects
The Indian Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has given its approval for three significant railway multitracking projects valued at ₹10,783 crore. These ambitious undertakings are set to add approximately 656 kilometers to the nation's railway network, spanning five key states: West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. The projects are slated for completion by the fiscal year 2029-30.
These expansions are designed to significantly increase line capacity, alleviate congestion on crucial routes, and enhance overall operational efficiency and service reliability. Beyond improving connectivity for passengers, the projects are expected to streamline the movement of goods and services, particularly benefiting regions across the five involved states.
Key Projects and Regional Impact
The approved projects include:
- Kharagpur–Jharsuguda (Bagdehi) 4th Line: This addition is aimed at strengthening rail capacity across the eastern and central parts of the network, a vital corridor for both passenger and freight traffic.
- Katni–Pendra Road 4th Line: Enhancing capacity on an important central Indian route, this line will improve connectivity in a key logistical region.
- Bilaspur (Uslapur)–Pendra Road 3rd Line: This project focuses on strengthening connectivity and easing congestion in another critical area of the central railway system.
Collectively, these three projects will cover 14 districts and are projected to benefit around 4,790 villages, impacting approximately 56 lakh (5.6 million) people. The initiatives are aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, emphasizing integrated planning, multimodal connectivity, and improved logistics efficiency across the country.
Boosting Freight Movement and Economic Growth
A major objective of this railway capacity expansion is to significantly boost freight transportation. The government anticipates that these new lines will facilitate an additional 27 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of freight traffic, crucial for commodities such as coal, cement, iron, and steel. The streamlined operations and reduced congestion are expected to benefit routes shared by both freight and passenger trains.
Beyond logistics, the projects are also expected to enhance rail access to various tourist and religious destinations, including the Taratarini Temple, Shri Khetra Jagannath Temple, Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, and Amarkantak Temple, among others. Improved connectivity is poised to stimulate economic activity, creating new employment and self-employment opportunities within the regions.
Environmental Benefits and Future Outlook
The government has also highlighted the environmental advantages of shifting more freight transportation to the rail network. It estimates that these projects could lead to a reduction of approximately 12 crore (120 million) liters in oil imports. Furthermore, the initiatives are projected to lower carbon dioxide emissions by around 62 crore (620 million) kilograms, an environmental benefit equivalent to planting about 2.48 crore (24.8 million) trees.
These large-scale railway projects underscore India's commitment to modernizing its infrastructure, fostering economic development, and pursuing more sustainable transportation solutions.
