India has significantly broadened the accessibility for e-visa holders, increasing the total number of designated entry points to 88 across the country. This expansion, notified by the government on Monday, adds 22 new locations, enhancing convenience for international travelers.
Key Additions to the E-Visa Network
The updated network now comprises 37 airports, 38 seaports, and 13 land ports. Among the notable new inclusions is the Attari land port, a crucial crossing on the India-Pakistan border. Additionally, the airports in Bhopal and Tirupati have been integrated into the e-visa facility, providing more aerial entry options.
Other newly added land ports include Darranga, Gede, Ghojadanga, Haridaspur, Jaigaon, Dawki, and Moreh. These strategic additions are spread across various border regions, aiming to facilitate smoother entry for a wider range of travelers.
Understanding India's E-Visa System
The e-visa program, first introduced in 2014 for citizens of 43 countries, has seen substantial growth and now caters to travelers from 172 nations. It covers 17 distinct sub-categories of travel, encompassing tourism, business, medical treatment, student visits, mountaineering, cruises, and transit, among others. The system boasts an efficient processing time, with approximately 95% of applications cleared within 72 hours.
Currently, e-visas account for a substantial 78% of all visas issued by India, underscoring the popularity and utility of the digital system. It is important to note that the e-visa facility does not extend to travelers holding Pakistani passports or individuals of Pakistani origin, who must apply for a standard visa through an Indian mission abroad.
Government's Vision for Travel Facilitation
The Indian government frames this expansion as part of a continuous effort to simplify and liberalize its visa regime without compromising national security. An official statement highlighted that these initiatives are undertaken "under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leadership of Union Home Minister Amit Shah." The goal is to facilitate legitimate foreign travelers while simultaneously strengthening technological infrastructure for internal security.
