Fuel prices for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) remained stable across major Indian cities on June 21. This stability comes as the Strait of Hormuz has reopened to commercial shipping, easing concerns over supply chain disruptions following a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the US and Iran.
Strait of Hormuz Reopens, Easing Supply Concerns
The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is a significant development for India, which imports approximately 60% of its LPG and 55-60% of its LNG through this critical maritime route. The US Navy lifted its blockade on Iranian ports on Thursday, allowing oil tankers to resume passage. US Vice President JD Vance confirmed that over 12 ships, carrying more than 12.5 million barrels of oil, transited overnight.
The MoU between the US and Iran grants both nations 60 days to finalize an agreement on Iran's nuclear program and establish a $300 billion reconstruction fund for Iran, alongside other financial initiatives. Despite these positive developments, some friction persists, with Switzerland peace talks being postponed and maritime traffic still facing logistical and geopolitical challenges.
Domestic Cylinder Booking Gap Extended
Amidst the ongoing uncertainty in West Asia, India has actively rationed LPG supplies. Commercial users, such as restaurants and hotels, are experiencing monitored allocations by regional committees to prioritize residential kitchens. Furthermore, the government has extended the booking gap for domestic LPG cylinders from 25 days to 45 days to curb panic buying and hoarding.
While LPG remains a primary cooking fuel, CNG and PNG are increasingly recognized as more stable and economical alternatives for consumers. Households and businesses are encouraged to monitor city-wise price updates and policy changes to manage their fuel expenses effectively.
