India: Prepaid Mobile Users Generate 76% More Revenue Than Postpaid, TRAI Reports

· · 3 min read

India's prepaid mobile subscribers generated 76% more average monthly revenue per user (ARPU) than postpaid customers in Q2 2026, with prepaid ARPU reaching ₹200.72 compared to postpaid's ₹114.26, according to the latest TRAI report. This surprising divergence challenges traditional telecom revenue assumptions.

New data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) reveals a significant and unexpected trend in India's wireless telecom market: prepaid mobile users are generating substantially more average monthly revenue per user (ARPU) than their postpaid counterparts.

Prepaid ARPU Outperforms Postpaid by 76%

According to TRAI's Indian Telecom Services Performance Indicator Report for the April-June quarter of 2026, the monthly average revenue per user for prepaid services stood at ₹200.72. In stark contrast, postpaid services recorded a monthly ARPU of just ₹114.26 during the same period. This means prepaid subscribers are generating approximately 75.7% more revenue per user.

The overall wireless ARPU across India rose 1.19% sequentially to ₹187.12 in the June quarter from ₹184.91 in the March quarter. On a year-on-year basis, wireless ARPU increased by 3.11%.

Understanding the Revenue Discrepancy

This notable divergence between prepaid and postpaid ARPU raises critical questions for telecom operators regarding subscriber behavior, tariff structures, and customer composition. While the data clearly shows prepaid users contributing more to ARPU, TRAI's report does not definitively establish the underlying causes.

Potential factors influencing these figures could include differences in the subscriber base demographics, the types of plans selected, varying recharge behaviors, and the specific services bundled within individual tariffs. It's important to note that a higher ARPU signifies average revenue per user and doesn't directly translate to higher profit margins, as the cost of serving different subscriber segments also plays a crucial role.

Sector Growth Amidst Changing Dynamics

Despite the intriguing prepaid-postpaid ARPU gap, the telecom sector continues to demonstrate overall growth. Total wireless mobile data usage surged by 8.30% sequentially to 84,424 petabytes in the June quarter. Concurrently, the average monthly data consumption per wireless data subscriber increased by 6.32% to 28.39 GB.

However, revenue realization per GB saw a decline of 5.07%, dropping to ₹7.13 from ₹7.51 in the preceding quarter. This indicates that while data consumption is rising, it doesn't necessarily lead to proportionally higher revenue per unit of usage.

The sector's gross revenue reached ₹1.068 lakh crore in the June quarter, marking a 10.50% year-on-year increase. Adjusted gross revenue (AGR) also grew by 9.19% year-on-year, reaching ₹88,796 crore.

Implications for Telecom Operators

For telecom companies, the challenge lies in converting increasing consumption into sustainable revenue growth while effectively managing network investments and service delivery costs. The significant gap in prepaid telecom ARPU underscores the necessity for operators to gain a deeper understanding of their customer mix rather than solely focusing on subscriber additions as a measure of commercial success. Further detailed, operator-level data would be required to fully explain the causes of this ARPU difference.
