India has made a significant leap in global tourism rankings, advancing nine positions to 31st out of 110 economies in the World Economic Forum's (WEF) 2026 Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI). This improvement highlights the country's progress in tourism infrastructure, cultural assets, and business travel facilities.
Meanwhile, Japan cemented its position as the world leader in travel and tourism development, topping the index. The United States, Spain, Australia, and France rounded out the top five, demonstrating robust conditions for sustainable tourism growth.
India's Remarkable Ascent in Global Tourism
The nine-place jump for India in the 2026 TTDI is a notable achievement, building on its 39th rank among 119 economies in the previous 2024 index. This upward trajectory is attributed to several key factors, including an increasingly cost-competitive travel environment and its rich natural attractions. India also benefits from a vast collection of cultural heritage sites, positioning it among the top 10 economies globally for World Heritage cultural sites, alongside China and Mexico.
Challenges and Future Focus for India
Despite the considerable progress, the WEF report identifies specific areas where India needs continued attention. These include enhancing workforce skills within the tourism sector, improving environmental sustainability practices, and further developing tourism infrastructure to effectively manage anticipated increases in demand. Addressing these aspects will be crucial for India to sustain its growth and accommodate future tourism volumes.
Japan Leads the World in Travel & Tourism Development
Japan's climb of two positions to secure the top spot in the 2026 TTDI underscores its comprehensive approach to tourism. The country's success coincides with record-breaking international visitor numbers, with 42.7 million international visitors recorded in 2025. This influx generated approximately $59.7 billion in visitor spending, according to WEF data. Other top-ranked nations include Germany, the UK, China, Switzerland, and Italy, with China being the only other Asian economy in the top 10.
Global Tourism Sector Shows Strong Recovery
The 2026 TTDI report indicates a strong global recovery in tourism conditions, with 101 of the 110 assessed economies recording higher scores between 2024 and 2026. The average index score increased by 2.1%, marking the fastest pace of growth since 2019. This global improvement is largely driven by advancements in cultural resources, tourism infrastructure and services, air connectivity, and business travel, signaling a resilient and evolving international tourism landscape.
