Indian equity markets resumed their downward trend on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, as investors engaged in profit booking following a brief one-day recovery. The 30-share BSE Sensex declined by 251.89 points, or 0.34%, to close at 72,781.89. Similarly, the NSE Nifty index lost 99.25 points, or 0.44%, settling at 22,622.70.
Broader market indices also faced pressure, with the Nifty Midcap 100 edging 0.08% lower and the Nifty Smallcap 100 slipping 0.32%, reflecting a muted sentiment across segments.
Factors Driving the Market Downturn
Market analysts attributed the decline to a combination of domestic profit booking and persistent global macroeconomic headwinds. Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, noted that the markets are likely to remain lacklustre amid mixed cues.
"Elevated crude oil prices and persistent geopolitical tensions continue to weigh on global sentiment, while the ongoing Q2 FY27 earnings season and optimism around a potential review of capital gains tax and securities transaction tax provide some domestic support," Khemka stated.
Brent crude oil prices remained elevated above $106 per barrel, fueling inflation concerns and supply-side worries. Ajit Mishra, SVP (Research) at Religare Broking, highlighted that macroeconomic headwinds, coupled with continued foreign portfolio outflows, reinforced investor caution.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, pointed to investor apprehension ahead of crucial US inflation data. He also mentioned that a hotter-than-expected domestic Wholesale Price Index (WPI) pushed bond yields higher, reviving concerns about a tighter monetary policy trajectory, which particularly impacted auto, private banking, and metal stocks.
Sectoral Performance and Outlook
While most sectors experienced weakness, a few demonstrated resilience. IT stocks continued their positive momentum, supported by recent earnings reports. Energy and FMCG sectors also performed well. However, losses in pharma, financials, and auto sectors limited the market's ability to sustain gains.
Looking ahead, experts suggest a period of consolidation for the Nifty. Nagaraj Shetti, Senior Technical Research Analyst at HDFC Securities, observed that a small negative candle on daily charts signals consolidation after Tuesday's sharp upmove.
"Nifty is currently placed at the crucial resistance around 22,700-22,800 levels, and a decisive breakout of this hurdle could open further short covering in the market towards 23,100-23,200 levels. Any weakness from here could find support around 22,300 level," Shetti added.
Investors are expected to focus on ongoing Q2 FY27 earnings for corporate performance cues and the sustainability of any market rebound. Key international data releases, including US CPI inflation, UK GDP, US PPI, and retail sales, are also anticipated to influence global market sentiment.
