Cautious Opening Expected for Indian Equities
Indian equity benchmark indices are poised for a cautious start to the week on Monday, September 7, 2026. Early indicators, such as GIFT Nifty Futures on the NSE International Exchange, were down by 73.60 points (0.31%) at 23,975.50, suggesting a negative opening for the domestic market.
Investors are anticipated to remain hesitant in building aggressive positions, as a confluence of factors, including elevated crude oil prices and escalating tensions in the Middle East, continues to overshadow otherwise supportive regional cues. This cautious sentiment persists even as the domestic IPO spree continues.
Global Factors Weigh Heavily
Wall Street concluded Friday with a dip, influenced by a robust US jobs report that heightened the probability of the US Federal Reserve increasing its key interest rate at its upcoming monetary policy meeting. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite all registered declines.
Brent crude prices saw a marginal rise of 0.2% to $96.45 a barrel, following a nearly 10% climb last week. US crude also increased by 0.4% to $91.85 a barrel. In currency markets, the dollar index experienced only a mild lift from the jobs report, standing at 99.135. Gold remained steady at $4,426 an ounce, having found support at $4,282 last week.
Expert Insights on Global Risks
Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, noted, "Markets are likely to see some relief, supported by easing expectations of a near-term US Fed rate hike and softer global bond yields. However, elevated Brent crude and continued West Asian tensions remain key risks to the recovery."
Domestic Market Dynamics and Investor Sentiment
Provisional data from NSE indicates that Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) were net sellers of domestic stocks on Friday, pulling out Rs 3,111.94 crore. Conversely, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) emerged as net buyers, investing Rs 8,930.12 crore. Foreign investors have been net sellers for the first week of September, withdrawing Rs 7,443 crore.
Ajit Mishra, SVP of Research at Religare Broking, advised, "Amid the prevailing volatility, investors should avoid aggressively chasing short-term rallies and instead use meaningful declines to gradually accumulate fundamentally strong companies. Proper position sizing, disciplined risk management and a stock-specific approach will remain important until there is clarity on crude oil, monetary policy and geopolitical situation."
Nifty50, Sensex, and India VIX Analysis
The short-term market trend for Nifty50 and Sensex appears weak. Amol Athawale, VP Technical Research at Kotak Securities, suggests that if the market trades above the 24,000/76800 mark, a pullback could continue towards 24,200/77400 and potentially 24,350/77800. However, a fall below 23,800/76100 could accelerate selling pressure, retesting the 23,600-23,500/75500-75200 zone.
Sachin Gupta, VP of Technical Research at Choice Equity Broking, highlighted that sustaining the 75,500–75,800 support zone is crucial for the Sensex. A recovery above 76,650–77,000 could offer relief. Vinay Rajani, Senior Technical Research Analyst at HDFC Securities, added that Nifty50 faces strong resistance in the 24,000–24,200 zone, with a decisive break below 23,800 potentially opening the path to 23,600.
The India VIX declined sharply by 5.80% to 10.68, indicating subdued volatility expectations despite the index's fragile technical setup, according to Dhupesh Dhameja, Derivatives Research Analyst at SAMCO Securities.
Nifty Bank Technical Outlook
Nifty Bank formed a small-bodied bearish candle on the daily chart, signaling indecision. Sudeep Shah, Head of Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities, noted that the 56,900–56,800 zone is a crucial support. A sustained hold above this region could maintain the ongoing consolidation phase, while a decisive breakout above 57,800–57,900 or a breakdown below 56,800 could trigger a meaningful directional move.
Dr. Ravi Singh, Chief Research Officer at Master Capital Services, stated that the broader structure remains constructive, with Nifty Bank holding above its 21-week and 55-week EMAs. Resistance is at 57,800, with a break potentially leading to 58,250. On the downside, 57,000 is immediate support, and a sustained break could drag the index to 56,600. A buy-on-dips approach near key support levels is preferred for the range-bound week ahead.
