Indian Markets Tumble: Sensex Dips 609 Points, Nifty Below 22,500 Amid Global Selloff

· · 2 min read

Indian benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, experienced significant declines in early trading on October 26, 2026. Sensex dropped 609 points to 72,514, while Nifty fell 133 points to 22,466, driven by rising Brent crude prices and negative Asian market sentiment.

Indian benchmark indices faced a sharp downturn in early trading on Monday, October 26, 2026, as global market pressures and rising crude oil prices weighed heavily on investor sentiment. The Sensex, India's key stock market index, plunged 609 points to trade at 72,514, while the Nifty 50 slipped 133 points, falling below the 22,500 mark to 22,466 from its previous close of 22,600.

Key Triggers Behind the Market Decline

Several factors contributed to the significant Indian stock market decline. High Brent crude oil prices remained a primary concern, holding steady at approximately $114 per barrel. This persistent elevation in crude prices, despite a recent fall from a six-month high, fuels inflation worries and impacts import-dependent economies like India.

Adding to the pressure was a prevailing negative sentiment across Asian markets. Major indices in the region experienced a selloff, particularly in technology and artificial intelligence sectors. Japan's Nikkei index dropped 280 points to 62,413, and South Korea's KOSPI was down 40 points, trading at 5512. This broader Asian weakness created a ripple effect on Indian bourses.

Geopolitical developments also played a role. US President Donald Trump's statement on Sunday, ruling out immediate military action against Iran, provided some clarity but did not entirely alleviate market anxieties, especially concerning regional stability and its potential impact on oil supplies.

Top Performers and Laggards

Among the 30-stock Sensex index, several heavyweights faced substantial losses. Asian Paints, Infosys, Bajaj Finance, and HCL Technologies were among the top losers, with shares falling up to 1.90% in early deals. Conversely, a few stocks managed to defy the broader trend, with Kotak Bank, Sun Pharma, Adani Ports, and Axis Bank emerging as the only gainers.

Market Capitalization Impact

The widespread selling led to a significant erosion of investor wealth. The market capitalization of firms listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) fell to Rs 448.69 lakh crore in early trading. This represented an investor loss of approximately Rs 3.14 lakh crore compared to the market cap of Rs 451.83 lakh crore recorded on October 23.

Market analysts are closely monitoring global cues, including crude oil price movements and international geopolitical tensions, as they assess the potential for further volatility in the coming days. Investors are advised to remain cautious amidst the current market instability.
