Indian Stocks Drop as Crude Nears $90; US-Iran Deal Hopes Fade

· · 3 min read

Indian equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty fell on Tuesday, driven by rising crude oil prices nearing $90 a barrel and fading hopes for a US-Iran deal. Geopolitical concerns fueled worries over imported inflation and corporate margins.

Indian Equities Decline Amid Geopolitical Tensions

Indian equity benchmarks experienced a downturn on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, as renewed geopolitical concerns and a significant rise in crude oil prices weighed heavily on investor sentiment. The 30-share BSE Sensex concluded the trading day down 388.19 points, or 0.49%, settling at 78,154.25. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty50 index recorded a decline of 112.10 points, or 0.46%, closing at 24,471.70.

Crude Oil Prices Fuel Inflation Worries

The primary catalyst for the market's fall was the escalating price of Brent crude, which approached the $90 per barrel mark. This surge was attributed to fading hopes for an early agreement between the United States and Iran, intensifying geopolitical uncertainty. Higher crude prices have reignited fears of imported inflation, potential pressure on the Indian rupee, and adverse impacts on corporate profit margins.

Ajit Mishra, SVP (Research) at Religare Broking, noted that investor sentiment remained subdued due to these factors. Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, echoed this, stating that the sharp rebound in crude prices shifted market attention back to inflation risks, tempering enthusiasm despite a supportive earnings backdrop.

Sectoral Performance and Market Breadth

Sectoral participation was predominantly negative across the board. Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), realty, and metals sectors emerged as the top laggards, experiencing significant declines. In contrast, pharmaceutical and IT stocks demonstrated relative resilience, offering some stability amidst the broader market weakness.

In the broader market, the Nifty Midcap100 ended marginally lower by 0.02%, while the Nifty Smallcap100 bucked the trend with a gain of 0.22%, indicating a mixed performance outside of the large-cap indices. Major Sensex constituents like Bharti Airtel, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, and Reliance Industries were among the prominent decliners.

Expert Outlook: Caution and Key Levels

Analysts recommend a cautious, stock-specific approach given the combination of elevated crude prices, ongoing geopolitical uncertainty, and pressure on financial heavyweights. Sachin Gupta, VP - Technical Research at Choice Equity Broking, observed that the Sensex formed a bearish daily candle, trading below its 200-day EMA, suggesting some immediate technical deterioration. However, the index remains above its 20-day, 50-day, and 100-day EMAs, indicating medium-term resilience. Gupta highlighted the 78,000–77,800 zone as crucial support to prevent further weakness, with 78,500–78,700 acting as a resistance for positive momentum.

For the Nifty, Sudeep Shah, Head - Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities, identified the 200-day EMA zone of 24,390-24,350 as a critical support area. A decisive break below 24,350 could accelerate the correction towards 24,200, while a sustained move above the 24,600-24,630 resistance band would be necessary to revive bullish momentum.
