Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan and members of his cabinet recently traded their government files for notebooks, participating in a two-day leadership workshop at the prestigious Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Kozhikode. The initiative, dubbed 'Reimagining Kerala', commenced on September 4, 2026, aiming to bolster governance skills and efficiency within the state's administration.
Enhancing Governance with Modern Approaches
The specialized training program was designed to infuse greater professionalism and effectiveness into Kerala's governance framework. CM Satheesan highlighted the necessity for political vision to be complemented by professional management, particularly as the state pursues ambitious long-term development goals and prepares for future challenges.
Sessions during the workshop covered crucial areas such as general management principles, fiscal and structural reforms, administrative resilience, and the implementation of technology-driven governance. Ministers were also introduced to contemporary tools, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data-driven decision-making processes, emphasizing a shift from traditional approaches.
Focus on AI and Policy Formulation
A significant portion of the workshop explored how advanced technology, particularly AI and data analytics, could transform governance and significantly improve public service delivery. Ministers gained insights into the growing role of these modern practices in administration and discussed how global developments could be adapted for Kerala's unique context.
CM Satheesan stressed the importance of rigorous analysis, consultation, and practical testing before implementing policy decisions on a larger scale. He underscored the need for governments to first ascertain a policy's real-world efficacy.
Key figures like Tourism Minister P C Vishnunath emphasized the critical role of leadership and effective policy formulation, while Labour and Child Welfare Minister Vina Bindhu Krishna shared her positive experiences from the program, highlighting the value of learning from expert faculty. The workshop was guided by IIM Kozhikode faculty, including Professor Debashis Chatterjee, who addressed ministers on transformational leadership in the age of AI, and encouraged inter-ministerial coordination and knowledge sharing.
