Fuel Prices Stable for Indian Households, Commercial LPG Sees Cut
As of August 8, 2026, retail prices for domestic Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) have held steady across India's major cities for over a month. This stability comes despite ongoing concerns regarding the US-Iran geopolitical situation and significant under-recoveries faced by oil marketing companies on household LPG cylinders.
Indian Oil Corporation Chairman AS Sahney stated that oil marketing companies continue to incur a loss of ₹503 on every 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder, as the current retail price remains below the actual cost.
Commercial LPG Cylinder Prices Reduced
In contrast to household rates, commercial 19-kg LPG cylinders, primarily used by hotels, restaurants, and other establishments, saw a notable price cut of ₹192 over the past weekend. This reduction offers some relief to businesses relying on these larger cylinders for their operations.
Geopolitical Factors and India's Energy Strategy
The global geopolitical landscape continues to influence India's energy outlook. The US Senate recently passed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, which could lead to substantial tariffs on countries importing Russian oil and gas, potentially impacting India. Against this backdrop, India is strategically planning to diversify its LPG imports, aiming to source up to a quarter of its supply from the United States by 2027. This move is intended to lessen dependence on Middle Eastern suppliers, mitigate supply disruptions, and support ongoing trade negotiations with Washington.
India, the world's third-largest oil importer and consumer, sourced approximately 90% of its 21.85 million metric tonnes of LPG imports from the Middle East in 2025. Imports account for about 66% of the country's total LPG consumption. Recent declines in LPG sales, down 17.4% to 2.37 million tonnes, are partly attributed to a shift towards piped natural gas, particularly following the West Asia crisis.
