Consumers across India are facing higher energy costs as prices for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) have been updated, effective September 7, 2026. The increases come amidst ongoing concerns over global supply chains and fluctuating international LNG prices.
CNG and PNG Price Hikes Explained
Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) implemented a significant hike in Delhi's CNG prices, raising them by ₹3.89 per kg. This change, effective August 29, brought the price to ₹86.98 per kg, up from ₹83.09 per kg. This marks a cumulative rise of nearly ₹10 per kg in Delhi's CNG rates since the beginning of the year.
Following suit, Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) increased CNG prices in Mumbai by ₹2 per kg, setting the new rate at ₹88 per kg as of September 1. MGL also raised the price of domestic Piped Natural Gas (DPNG) by ₹1 per standard cubic metre (SCM) from the same date.
These price adjustments are largely attributed to a sharp rise in international LNG prices, exacerbated by the renewed West Asia crisis and disruptions to gas cargo movements through the critical Strait of Hormuz.
