Mumbai Under Yellow Alert: IMD Predicts Intensifying Monsoon Rains Until June 24

· · 2 min read

Mumbai is under a yellow alert from the India Meteorological Department, with monsoon rains expected to intensify until June 24, 2026. After a significant delay, the Southwest Monsoon is projected to be officially declared over the city on June 23.

Mumbai is bracing for intensifying monsoon rains under a yellow alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which is expected to remain in effect until June 24, 2026. The city, which experienced a significant delay in the onset of its monsoon season, is now anticipating its official declaration on June 23.

Monsoon's Delayed Arrival and Revival

After nearly a month of unusually subdued rainfall activity, the Southwest Monsoon is finally making its presence felt in Mumbai. The IMD had previously noted favorable conditions for the monsoon's further advance into parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, as well as Telangana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar over the coming 48 hours from June 22.

Skymet Weather, a private forecasting agency, echoed these sentiments, stating that atmospheric conditions were becoming conducive for the monsoon's official declaration over Mumbai on June 23, 2026. This comes after the monsoon's arrival was delayed by more than 12 days, causing concern among residents and agricultural sectors.

Moderate Rains Expected, Not Deluge

Despite the revival, Mumbai is not expected to experience the classic "onset deluge" often associated with three-digit rainfall totals in its initial phase. Instead, forecasters predict moderate rainfall, with only a few isolated intense spells. This pattern is seen as a welcome development for Mumbaikars, as extremely heavy downpours frequently lead to severe waterlogging, flash floods, and significant traffic disruptions.

Recent data from the Santacruz Observatory showed 32.3 mm of rain recorded on June 22, 2026. While still below the seasonal normal, this figure marked an improvement over earlier spells in June, which saw only 13 mm on June 1 and 19 mm on June 21, punctuated by a prolonged dry period.

Outlook and El Niño Watch

For the remainder of June 2026, Mumbai is likely to receive fairly consistent rainfall, interspersed with occasional heavy showers. However, the monsoon's advance into eastern and central parts of the country is expected to be slower, potentially leading to longer waits for those regions.

Adding another layer of complexity to the forecast is the ongoing El Niño Watch. Its influence is predicted to become more pronounced during July and August, which could impact the latter half of the monsoon season, even as Mumbai continues to operate under its yellow alert and awaits the full establishment of the monsoon.
