Wellington, New Zealand – A new Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and New Zealand, which came into effect on October 20, 2026, is set to significantly boost professional mobility and educational opportunities for Indian citizens. The agreement introduces new work visa pathways, extended post-study work rights, and a working holiday scheme, aiming to strengthen economic ties and address New Zealand's workforce needs.
New Temporary Employment Entry Visas for Skilled Workers
Under the recently enacted FTA, New Zealand is introducing two new Temporary Employment Entry (TEE) visa categories specifically designed for highly skilled occupations and select professions associated with India. These new pathways are tailored to meet New Zealand's demand for skilled labor.
A cap of up to 5,000 TEE visa holders will be permitted in New Zealand at any given time. The majority of these slots are designated for professions already identified on New Zealand's Green List, which highlights occupations in high demand across the country. These visas will be valid for a maximum of three years.
Applicants for the TEE visas must fulfill several immigration criteria, including securing a qualifying job offer from an accredited employer, meeting specific qualification and English-language requirements, and passing health, character, and identity checks. It is important to note that these TEE visas do not offer a direct route to permanent residency in New Zealand; applicants seeking permanent settlement will need to explore alternative immigration pathways.
Extended Post-Study Work Rights for PhD Graduates
The FTA also brings substantial changes for Indian students pursuing higher education in New Zealand. Effective November 16, 2026, eligible Indian graduates who complete a PhD at a New Zealand institution will be able to apply for post-study work visas valid for up to four years. This represents an increase from the previous maximum of three years.
This additional year is intended to provide doctoral graduates with more time to gain international work experience and secure employment opportunities directly relevant to their advanced qualifications.
Student Employment Commitments
Beyond post-study rights, Indian students will also benefit from commitments regarding employment during their studies. While eligible international students, including Indians, can currently work up to 25 hours per week, the agreement commits New Zealand to allow Indian students to work for at least 20 hours per week, should the existing policy change.
Working Holiday Scheme for Young Indians
Further expanding opportunities, the FTA includes provisions for a working holiday scheme for Indian citizens aged 18 to 30. This scheme is anticipated to be launched within two years of the agreement's entry into force, offering 1,000 places annually. Successful applicants will be granted permission to stay in New Zealand for up to 12 months, providing a unique opportunity to combine travel with temporary work experience.
