Commemorative ₹100 Silver Coin Announced
The government's announcement of a special ₹100 coin underscores the national recognition of Uttam Kumar's legacy. According to a gazette notification dated September 3 from the Department of Economic Affairs under the Finance Ministry, the coin will be issued as part of the "centenary celebration of Mahanayak Uttam Kumar." This unique coin will be crafted from 99.9 percent pure silver and will feature a diameter of 44 millimetres.
Who Was Uttam Kumar?
Born Arun Kumar Chattopadhyay on September 3, 1926, Uttam Kumar ascended to become one of Indian cinema's biggest stars. Over his career, he appeared in more than 200 films, becoming synonymous with the golden era of Bengali cinema. His collaborations with actress Suchitra Sen are particularly iconic, with films such as Saptapadi, Harano Sur, Nayak, and Antony Firingee continuing to captivate audiences generations later.
Uttam Kumar passed away on July 24, 1980, at the age of 53. However, more than four decades after his death, his performances remain a significant influence on Bengali popular culture.
