Doha, Qatar – Expatriates in Qatar now face a significantly shorter window to depart the country once their residence permits are cancelled. The grace period for leaving has been reduced from 30 days to a mere 14 days, according to an announcement by a Ministry of Interior official.
The change was revealed during a webinar on safe travel procedures organized by the ministry's Public Relations Department. Captain Ali Ahmed Ali Al Kuwari of the Airport Passports Department confirmed the new timeframe, stating, “Earlier it was 30 days, but currently it is two weeks.”
Penalties for Overstaying
Expatriates who remain in Qatar beyond the new 14-day grace period will incur a fine of QR10 (approximately ₹260 INR) for each day of overstay. This regulation is particularly pertinent for the large number of foreign workers residing in Qatar, including thousands of Indian expatriates, who must now make swift arrangements following a permit cancellation.
For those holding visit visas, Captain Al Kuwari also reiterated the importance of checking visa validity and the permitted duration of stay. Overstaying a visit visa carries a considerably higher penalty of QR200 (approximately ₹5,260 INR) per day.
Crucial Checks Before Travel
Authorities strongly advise all travelers to review their immigration status and check for any outstanding dues before planning their departure. This includes verifying for pending traffic fines, overstay penalties, or any other financial obligations that could impede their journey. The Metrash mobile application is recommended for residents to easily review their status.
Additionally, residents looking to transfer their residence permit to a new passport can complete this process conveniently through the Metrash app. Captain Al Kuwari also encouraged passengers to utilize the electronic gate system at Hamad International Airport, which operates 76 e-gates across arrival and departure terminals, to expedite immigration procedures.
Important Rules for Newborns
The official also touched upon regulations concerning newborns in Qatar. Residents are required to report births to the passport authorities and obtain the necessary residency documents. A child born in Qatar must secure a residence permit under the father's sponsorship after completing the required paperwork with the relevant embassy. Without a valid residence permit, a newborn would be unable to re-enter Qatar after leaving the country.
