Rubio to Meet Mukesh Ambani: US-India Ties Solid Amid Starlink Dispute

· · 3 min read

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to meet Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani in India next week. This visit underscores robust US-India energy cooperation despite Elon Musk's recent criticism of Ambani's business practices.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to visit India from October 17 to 22, with a key stop planned in Mumbai. During his trip, Rubio is expected to meet with Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries, a move that signals Washington's continued strong engagement with the Indian conglomerate.

Deepening Energy Cooperation

Ambassador Sergio Gor, US Ambassador to India, confirmed at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi that Rubio will also travel to Jamnagar in Gujarat. This location is home to the world's largest oil refining complex, where the Secretary of State is anticipated to meet with other Reliance executives.

The visit comes seven months after US President Donald Trump announced Reliance's involvement in constructing America's first major new oil refinery in nearly five decades. This development marks a significant shift, following previous US criticism of Indian refiners for benefiting from discounted Russian crude amidst the Ukraine war. Ambassador Gor highlighted this as a proud achievement, stating, "We're also very proud because they're opening the first refinery in the United States in 50 years."

The proposed US refinery is designed to process approximately 168,000 barrels of American shale oil daily, with Reliance having a 20-year agreement to purchase its fuel output. This renewed engagement underscores Reliance's pivotal role in the global energy landscape and its importance to US energy investment plans.

Musk's Criticism and Market Competition

Rubio's anticipated meeting with Ambani occurs amidst a public disagreement between Elon Musk and Ambani concerning satellite internet services in India. Musk recently used X (formerly Twitter) to sarcastically refer to Ambani as India's "prime minister," accusing him of shielding Reliance's telecom business from competition.

Musk's company, SpaceX, is awaiting approval for its Starlink satellite internet services in India. He argues that Starlink could provide crucial connectivity to underserved communities, enhance educational opportunities, and support small businesses. However, he questioned whether Ambani would permit such competition, suggesting Reliance benefits from a monopolistic position in the market.

India's Ministry of Communications has refuted Musk's allegations of regulatory interference, stating that Starlink and other licensed satellite operators are undergoing security assessments at a similar stage before spectrum allocation. While Starlink has secured some regulatory clearances, it still requires approval for commercial operations. Meanwhile, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are also actively pursuing satellite internet services, intensifying competition in this nascent market.

Against this backdrop, Secretary Rubio's expected interaction with Mukesh Ambani reaffirms Washington's continued commitment to Reliance as it seeks to deepen critical energy and strategic ties with India.
