New Delhi – Senior bureaucrat Mandeep K Bhandari, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 2001 batch from the AGMUT cadre, has been named the new chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The appointment follows a significant bureaucratic reshuffle by the Union government on September 25.
Mandeep K Bhandari's Extensive Background
Born on December 14, 1974, Dr. Mandeep K Bhandari holds an MBBS degree from Dayanand Medical College, Ludhiana, where he graduated with a gold medal from Punjab University. His diverse administrative career spans over two decades, encompassing roles in district administration, health, education, and public-sector institutions.
Bhandari's early career saw him serving as Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) in Budgam. He later held key positions including Additional Development Commissioner in Kathua and Deputy Commissioner of both Leh and Jammu. These postings provided him with deep exposure to governance and development challenges across various regions of Jammu and Kashmir.
Experience at the Centre and J&K
His experience also includes a significant tenure as Additional CEO of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. Later, he served as Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, and as Commissioner/Secretary in the Jammu and Kashmir government's Health and Medical Education Department, showcasing his leadership in critical public service sectors.
At the Union government level, Bhandari served as Private Secretary to the Human Resource Development Minister from January to September 2018. He then moved to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, where he was Joint Secretary from September 2018 to January 2023. His combined experience in both education-related and health ministries is particularly relevant to his new role at CBSE.
Prior to his CBSE appointment, Bhandari was the Principal Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, a position he assumed in March 2023. He also held additional charge as CEO of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board. In 2026, he was empanelled for Additional Secretary/Additional Secretary-equivalent positions at the Centre, underscoring his rising profile within the civil service.
What Lies Ahead for CBSE
Mandeep K Bhandari takes over the chairperson's position from Lokhande Prashant Sitaram, who had been holding additional charge while serving as Additional Secretary in the Union Home Ministry. Bhandari's appointment comes at a crucial time for CBSE, one of India's largest school education boards.
With his extensive background in district administration, education, health, and senior government assignments, Bhandari is now tasked with overseeing CBSE's comprehensive functions. This includes critical areas such as examinations, the affiliation framework for schools, curriculum development, and various other responsibilities vital to school education across the country.
