Shyam Metalics and Energy Ltd. has announced a significant strategic acquisition, securing the mining rights for the Phutamura coal block in Chhattisgarh. This move is a critical step towards enhancing the company's backward integration efforts and ensuring long-term fuel security for its operations.
Strategic Importance of Phutamura Coal Block
The newly acquired Phutamura coal block, located in the Mand-Raigarh coalfield within Raigarh district, spans approximately 7.324 square kilometers. It boasts estimated coal reserves of around 170 million tonnes. According to the company's announcement on October 13, mining operations and coal production are slated to commence in July 2027.
This acquisition is positioned as a strategic initiative to guarantee a stable, long-term, and cost-effective coal supply. This supply will primarily serve Shyam Metalics' captive power generation and steel manufacturing operations, reducing dependence on external coal sources and bolstering operational self-sufficiency.
Leadership's Vision for Self-Reliance
"Our Group's investment in Alom Solar Private Limited and the securing of the Phutamura Coal Block marks a pivotal milestone in our strategic journey toward absolute self-reliance," stated Brij Bhushan Agarwal, Chairman and Managing Director of Shyam Metalics and Energy.
Agarwal further emphasized the importance of securing long-term raw material linkages as the company continues to expand its manufacturing capabilities. He highlighted that the 170 million tonnes of coal reserves significantly strengthen their backward integration framework, ensuring uninterrupted fuel security for their captive power plants and core steel operations.
