Sunil Bharti Mittal, the esteemed founder and chairman of Bharti Enterprises, has been bestowed with France's highest civilian distinction, the Chevalier de l'Ordre national de la Légion d'Honneur (Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour). The prestigious award comes from French President Emmanuel Macron, acknowledging Mittal's pivotal role in enhancing economic relations between India and France, as well as his remarkable achievements in the fields of telecommunications and digital infrastructure.
The announcement was made on October 12, 2026, with the official insignia set to be conferred at a ceremony at the Embassy of France in New Delhi on October 28. Expressing his gratitude, Mittal stated he was deeply moved and humbled by the recognition, highlighting that his long-standing association with France dates back to 1992.
A Legacy of Indo-French Collaboration
Mittal's connection with France began when Compagnie Générale des Eaux partnered with Bharti during the nascent stages of mobile telephony in India. This foundational relationship has since evolved and deepened, notably through his current role as co-chairman of Eutelsat, a Paris-headquartered satellite communications company where Bharti Space remains the largest private shareholder.
Thierry Mathou, the French Ambassador to India, lauded Mittal as a friend of France for over three decades, emphasizing his instrumental role in advancing business relations between the two nations. Ambassador Mathou also pointed to Mittal's ongoing contributions as Vice-Chairman of Eutelsat, especially as India and France forge ahead collaboratively in space and digital technology.
Bharti Enterprises: A Diversified Powerhouse
Founded by Mittal in 1976, Bharti Enterprises has grown into a vast, diversified conglomerate with significant interests across telecommunications, digital infrastructure, financial services, hospitality, real estate, and space communications. Its flagship entity, Bharti Airtel, stands as a telecommunications giant, serving over 650 million subscribers across India, South Asia, and Africa.
The Legion of Honour adds another distinguished accolade to Sunil Bharti Mittal's impressive list of international and national recognitions. In 2024, he became the first Indian citizen to receive the Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE) from King Charles III. Prior to that, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian honor, in 2007.
Mittal reiterated his commitment to fostering even deeper economic ties between India and France, underscoring the enduring partnership that has characterized his career and the growth of Bharti Enterprises.
