Tata Electronics Suffers Major Cyber Breach, Exposing Apple & Tesla Data

· · 2 min read

Tata Electronics has confirmed a significant cyber breach by the 'World Leaks' ransomware group, exposing over 200,000 corporate files. The leaked data, accessible on the dark web, includes sensitive design specifications for Apple and Tesla components, internal emails, and employee passport copies.

Indian manufacturing giant Tata Electronics has confirmed a substantial cybersecurity incident, revealing that a ransomware group known as 'World Leaks' has exposed highly sensitive data belonging to the company and its key clients, Apple and Tesla. The breach, which came to light around June 22, 2026, has seen more than 200,000 corporate files leaked onto the dark web.

Breach Details and Exposed Information

Security researchers, as reported by Reuters, discovered the vast cache of stolen information, which has been publicly accessible since at least June 10. The leaked material is extensive and includes critical data such as internal emails, system log files, detailed technical engineering drawings, product specifications, and quality control standards. Disturbingly, copies of employee passports were also found among the compromised data.

Specifically, documents related to Tesla are believed to concern components for an updated version of its Model 3 vehicle. The exposure of such sensitive design and specification documents poses a significant risk to the intellectual property and competitive edge of both Apple and Tesla, who rely on Tata Electronics for manufacturing various components.

Company Response and Wider Implications

In a statement to Reuters, Tata Electronics acknowledged the breach, stating, "A few weeks ago, Tata Electronics identified a cybersecurity incident on some of our systems. Our response protocols were deployed immediately, and the incident has had no impact on our operations across businesses, which remain unaffected." A source familiar with the situation also indicated that Tata Electronics had received a ransom demand in connection with the digital intrusion.

Apple is reportedly taking the incident seriously and is actively conducting a "full analysis" of the breach. The 'World Leaks' group, which emerged in early 2025 as a rebrand of the 'Hunters International' ransomware operation, is known for its strategy of data exfiltration and threatening public exposure unless a financial settlement is reached, rather than merely encrypting files.

This security lapse presents an additional challenge for Apple as it continues to aggressively expand its manufacturing and supply chain operations in India. This strategic diversification away from China is a key initiative supported by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The cyberattack follows other recent difficulties for Tata Electronics, including an ongoing investigation into allegations of agricultural land contamination near one of its flagship iPhone component facilities.
