A Decade of Innovation Almost Lost
Founded by electronics engineer Arjun Arunachalam, Voxelgrids dedicated over a decade to developing India's first homegrown Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner. This ambitious project aimed to reduce India's heavy dependence on imported MRI machines, which currently account for an estimated ₹3,500 crore annually.
During the unprecedented financial uncertainties of the pandemic, Voxelgrids received an acquisition offer from a multinational medical technology corporation. Despite the compelling financial relief, Arunachalam made the difficult decision to reject the buyout. "We thought partnering with the company would risk our innovation. We wanted to ensure that this technology remained India's own," he stated, underscoring the commitment to national technological sovereignty.
Tata Trusts and Zoho Provide a Lifeline
The startup's fortunes changed dramatically when Tata Trusts, under the leadership of the late Ratan Tata, stepped in with vital financial backing. This crucial investment allowed Voxelgrids to continue its intensive research and product development without sacrificing ownership or its core mission.
Further bolstering the company, Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu also provided significant support. The combined backing from these Indian entities ensured that Voxelgrids could press forward with commercialising its indigenous MRI technology, securing its future and impact on Indian healthcare.

The successful development and retention of Voxelgrids' MRI scanner represent a major milestone for India's healthcare ecosystem. The company projects that its indigenous machine can be manufactured at nearly 40% lower cost than imported alternatives and is approximately 50% lighter, simplifying installation and deployment.
More importantly, Voxelgrids estimates that the cost of MRI scans could eventually decrease by up to 70%. This dramatic reduction would make advanced diagnostic imaging far more affordable and accessible across the country, particularly in underserved regions. The innovation is a significant step towards healthcare self-reliance, strengthening India's position in high-end medical technology manufacturing.
From GE Healthcare to Indian Innovation
Arjun Arunachalam's journey began with specialised studies in MRI physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, followed by a tenure at GE Healthcare in the United States. Upon returning to India and teaching at IIT Bombay, he recognised the limited access Indian researchers had to advanced MRI systems and the lack of opportunities for local innovation.
Driven by a desire to contribute meaningfully to India, Arunachalam founded Voxelgrids. Today, the company proudly states that nearly every component of its MRI scanner – from hardware and electronics to imaging software – has been designed and developed in-house, marking a true testament to indigenous engineering prowess.
