Tewolde Gebremariam, formerly the chief of Ethiopian Airlines, officially assumed operational leadership of Air India on Monday, stepping into the role previously held by Campbell Wilson. However, his formal designation as CEO and accountable manager is still pending the crucial security clearance from the Union Home Ministry, which is anticipated by the end of the current month.
Chairman N Chandrasekaran is expected to introduce Gebremariam to Air India employees at a town hall meeting. Both Chandrasekaran and former Air India chairman and managing director Pradeep Singh Kharola, who have been guiding Gebremariam since he joined the Tata airline early last month, will continue to provide close support during his initial tenure.
Addressing Critical Challenges
Gebremariam takes the helm at a pivotal time for Air India, as the airline grapples with significant challenges across multiple fronts. Key concerns include enhancing safety protocols, improving operational reliability, and bolstering financial performance. The airline reported a substantial loss exceeding ₹26,000 crore in the fiscal year 2026 and is seeking a fresh equity infusion of ₹10,000 crore from its owners, Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines.
Sources indicate that Gebremariam will be granted considerable autonomy to identify and rectify operational gaps, as well as to implement corrective measures swiftly to improve safety and long-term sustainability. His immediate priorities are expected to include a comprehensive review of operations, identifying shortcomings, and executing rapid improvements.
Focus on Safety and Engineering
Safety remains a paramount concern, especially following a fatal crash in Ahmedabad last June that resulted in over 270 fatalities. More recently, on August 4, approximately 20 passengers and four crew members sustained injuries on a Phuket-Delhi flight due to a sudden loss of altitude. Air India subsequently dismissed the aircraft's captain after a preliminary investigation found a non-negative result for a psychoactive substance.
Gebremariam's experience in building robust operational and engineering capabilities at Ethiopian Airlines is anticipated to be instrumental in strengthening Air India's technical organization and maintenance systems, particularly as its fleet undergoes expansion. His mandate also includes a strong emphasis on consistency in operations, strict adherence to procedures, and overall reliability.
