Traders Urge Delhi LG: Relocate Protests to City Outskirts to Prevent Business Paralysis

· · 2 min read

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has written to Delhi LG Taranjit Singh Sandhu, requesting designated protest sites on the city's outskirts. CAIT argues that while the right to protest is vital, it should not disrupt urban life and trade, especially during festive seasons.

New Delhi – The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has formally appealed to Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, urging the establishment of designated protest sites on the outskirts of the national capital. CAIT contends that while the right to protest is a fundamental aspect of democracy, it must not be allowed to paralyze city operations and infringe upon the livelihoods of other citizens.

In its letter, the traders' association highlighted the severe economic impact of repeated demonstrations within Delhi's commercial and market areas. CAIT emphasized the need for a mechanism that allows public demonstrations without obstructing the normal functioning of the city, particularly for businesses, street vendors, and hawkers.

Disruptions Impacting Delhi's Economy

CAIT stressed that Delhi attracts lakhs of traders and business visitors daily, many of whom are now discouraged from visiting due to protest-related disruptions. The association pointed out that these disturbances have caused immense financial losses, especially during crucial festive periods when businesses rely heavily on increased trade. These losses, CAIT noted, are often irrecoverable in the remaining business days.

“The right to protest cannot become a right to paralyse the city,” the letter stated, underscoring the delicate balance between democratic rights and economic stability. Delhi typically sees an average daily trade of approximately ₹2,200 crore. However, in the past month alone, normal business activities have been disrupted for nearly 14 days due to various demonstrations.

Call for Coordinated Framework

The association specifically cited recent protests in areas like Jantar Mantar, Connaught Place, and Parliament Street, which have severely impacted traffic and business in key market hubs such as Connaught Place, Khan Market, Janpath, and Sadar Bazaar.

CAIT is not seeking to curtail the democratic right to protest but rather advocates for a system where protests respect the rights and convenience of all citizens. The traders have called for a coordinated framework to manage demonstrations effectively, suggesting that the LG identify and officially notify suitable locations, preferably on the outskirts of Delhi, for holding protests, demonstrations, public meetings, and political gatherings. These locations should consider accessibility, public convenience, and law-and-order requirements.
