US Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer is set to arrive in New Delhi on June 22, 2026, for significant bilateral trade discussions with India. Greer will engage with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on June 23 and the morning of June 24 before departing later that day, according to Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal.
These upcoming talks aim to build on previous discussions held from June 1-4, when a USTR delegation visited New Delhi. Agrawal stated that the expectation is for the talks to focus on the “final touches of the interim trade deal as well as the larger bilateral trade agreement.”
Addressing Section 301 Investigations
A key component of the ongoing negotiations involves investigations under Section 301 of the US Trade Act. Indian officials are hopeful these investigations will be resolved as part of the broader trade pact. Sources indicated that “whenever we try to sign the deal, we will have to see these investigations as well,” underscoring their importance in the overall trade relationship.
A USTR report issued on June 3 had alleged that India was among 54 countries failing to legally prohibit the import of goods made with forced labor, proposing additional tariffs of 12.5%.
“During the visit, the teams held constructive and positive discussions across a wide range of issues covering Trade in Goods, Non-Tariff Measures, Customs and Trade Facilitation, Economic Security Alignment and other areas of mutual interest,” an official release had stated following the earlier June talks.
Path Towards a Comprehensive Agreement
The consistent engagement between India and the US highlights a mutual desire to advance their trade relationship. These high-level visits are crucial steps towards potentially finalizing an interim trade agreement and laying the groundwork for a more comprehensive bilateral pact.
