YES Bank Shares Plunge 27% to 52-Week Low Amid AT1 Bond Ruling; Analysts See Oversold Conditions

· · 3 min read

YES Bank shares recently hit a 52-week low, plummeting 27% after the Supreme Court upheld the quashing of its Rs 8,415-crore AT1 bond write-down. Technical indicators show the stock is deeply oversold, prompting caution from analysts.

Shares of YES Bank Ltd, a prominent private lender in India, have recently fallen dramatically, reaching a 52-week low. The stock has seen a 27% decline since mid-October, drawing significant attention from retail investors and market analysts alike. This downturn follows a crucial Supreme Court decision that upheld a Bombay High Court ruling, which had quashed the bank's March 2020 write-down of its Rs 8,415-crore Additional Tier 1 (AT1) bonds.

Supreme Court Ruling Impacts Investor Confidence

The Supreme Court's decision to dismiss appeals by YES Bank, the central government, and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has created fresh uncertainties for the lender. The ruling effectively reinstated the Bombay High Court's order regarding the AT1 bonds, a move that directly impacted investor sentiment and triggered a sharp sell-off.

On October 14, the stock closed at Rs 21.21 on the BSE but has since fallen to a 52-week low of Rs 15.53 in recent trading sessions, marking a 27% loss for investors within a short period.

Technical Indicators Signal Deeply Oversold Conditions

From a technical standpoint, YES Bank shares are currently trading below their 5-day, 10-day, 20-day, 30-day, 50-day, 100-day, 150-day, and 200-day moving averages, confirming a strong bearish trend. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) for the stock has dropped to 17.5, which is well below the 30-point threshold typically indicating a deeply oversold condition and intense selling pressure.

Analysts Offer Cautious Outlook and Key Levels

Technical analysts are advising extreme caution regarding YES Bank's stock. Here's what some experts are saying:

  • Virat Jagad, Sr. Technical Research Analyst at Bonanza, noted a sharp breakdown below key support levels of Rs 17.28 and Rs 16.02. With heavy selling pressure and RSI near 17, he confirmed a strong bearish trend and advised avoiding fresh buying, suggesting existing investors consider reducing exposure. A sustained recovery above Rs 16.02 is essential for initial stabilization.
  • Sachin Gupta, VP – Research at Choice Broking, highlighted that YES Bank has closed lower for six consecutive weeks on the weekly chart and breached multiple trendline supports. While the weekly RSI at 24.80 indicates deeply oversold conditions that might lead to a short-term pullback, the overall chart structure remains weak. Gupta suggested a relief rally could occur if the stock sustains above Rs 14.70–Rs 15, but a decisive break below this range could push it further towards Rs 12.50. He identified the Rs 16.30–Rs 16.80 zone as a potential exit opportunity on a pullback.
  • Jigar S Patel from Anand Rathi observed the stock trading in a broad range of Rs 15–18, indicating a lack of clear directional momentum. He placed immediate support at Rs 14.50 and resistance at Rs 17.75. Patel advised traders to wait for a decisive breakout above Rs 17.75 for a counter-trend recovery towards Rs 19, or a breakdown below Rs 14.50, before taking fresh directional positions.

Given the continued selling pressure and deeply oversold technicals, market participants are advised to remain extremely cautious and monitor key support and resistance levels closely for any signs of a trend reversal.
