Amazon Rehires Laid-Off Staff for AI & Machine Learning Roles After Mass Layoffs

· · 2 min read

Amazon is reportedly re-recruiting some employees previously laid off, specifically targeting talent in AI and machine learning. This initiative follows rounds of job cuts that saw over 30,000 staff depart the tech giant.

Amidst a challenging tech job market, Amazon is reportedly taking an unexpected turn by re-engaging former employees who were part of its recent mass layoffs. The company is actively reaching out to laid-off staff, particularly those with expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), offering them opportunities to return.

This move comes after Amazon undertook several rounds of layoffs throughout the year, impacting over 30,000 employees as part of its restructuring plans. While other tech giants like Meta, Oracle, and Google continue to streamline operations and reduce workforces, Amazon's approach signals a strategic reallocation of resources.

"Swami's Boomerang Reengagement Initiative"

According to reports, Amazon's outreach is part of an initiative dubbed “Swami's Boomerang Reengagement Initiative,” spearheaded by AWS VP Swami Sivasubramanian. Former employees have received emails stating, “A lot has changed since you were here, and there’s some really compelling work happening across AI/ML right now.” In some cases, recruiters from AWS Finance have offered expedited pathways to new job offers.

An Amazon spokesperson, Haley Silva, clarified that “boomerang hiring” is a longstanding, company-wide practice and not a new initiative specifically created due to recent layoffs or the push for AI talent. She emphasized that individuals who were previously laid off are eligible to be rehired, and the company is always interested in connecting with talented people for open roles, whether new candidates or former Amazonians.

Focus on High-Growth Areas

Despite the official stance, this targeted re-engagement highlights a broader industry trend where tech companies are aggressively reallocating resources into high-growth sectors. For Amazon, this includes areas such as machine learning infrastructure, custom silicon development, and enterprise cloud AI services. Former employees receiving these “boomerang” emails are getting a valuable chance to rejoin the company in a competitive job market, especially those whose skills align with Amazon's evolving strategic priorities in AI.
